Is this calendar online somewhere with links to descriptions/details about the events?  For example is "Project Healthy Bones" an exercise class or a talk or ???  Not enough info here to tell, which is not a problem if there is somewhere else to go to get the info, as it's a good summary.  I haven't kept up very well, so perhaps a previous post answers my question (?)

Some of these events are listed on the SOMA Two Towns For All Ages website  Even then, description is minimal.  Events that are listed in the monthly email are a compilation of programs being offered by a variety of organizations in our community.

Project Healthy Bones is a fitness class aimed at seniors who have developed osteoporosis and is run by the SO Department of Recreation.  The class has been meeting weekly at the DeHart Community Center while the Baird is being renovated.  Information on the class may be obtained by contacting the SO Department of Recreation.

SOMA Two Towns For All Ages is planning to include a series of articles about scams aimed at seniors in the bi-monthly newsletter.  To make these articles as current and meaningful as possible, we would like to know which scams are currently targeting seniors in our community.  If you have experienced any scam attempts recently or know of someone else who has been so targeted, please either post the information here or contact Cathy Rowe directly with the information.

SOMA Two Towns For All Ages has a social event scheduled for Sunday March 12, 2017 from 2 pm to 4 pm at the Woodland. This is a meet and mix event designed to enable Seniors from Maplewood and South Orange to get to know one another. Admission is one canned good for the OLS Food Pantry. To the best of my knowledge there is no registration or RSVP required. If this changes, I will post updated information to this thread. If anyone reading this knows of other events which would be of particular interest to Seniors, please post them here.

An "LOVE LOCAL" Event at 2 Orchard Road welcomes seniors. Feb 13th, from 5pm-8pm.

please come meet other locals and shop local!

Thank you for posting this.   Do you accept the Classic Card (a discount/special offer card for Maplewood and South Orange residents age 65+)?  If not, what special offer are you giving our seniors during the above posted valentine promotion?  None is specified in your above post.

For more information about participating in the Classic Card promotion, contact SOMA Two Towns For All Ages which sponsors the program.  Maplewood residents interested in obtaining a free classic card can apply at Maplewood Town Hall (Recreation).  Proof of age and proof of residence required at time of application.

I just received the following email:

Dear Seniors,

The Interfaith Hospitality Network of Essex County provides emergency shelter to families in our neighboring communities through our area network of religious congregations. Each church, synagogue, etc will host 4 families for 1 to 2 weeks at a time. The families who stay with us are typically single moms with young children. We depend on volunteers to cook and host dinners, visit as evening hosts and chaperone as overnight hosts.

Morrow Church in Maplewood has generously extended their hosting period for an extra week from March 1-8 and are in need of volunteers, especially for overnight hosts, who are asked to stay at the church from 8 pm until 7 am the next morning. If you are willing to help in this important role or would like more information, please feel free to reach out to me at gigiannachen@gmail.com.

From AARP Livable:

The Internal Revenue Service's new “U.S. Tax Return for Seniors” could make filing season a bit less taxing for some older taxpayers — provided you qualify to use it.

If you or your spouse were born before Jan. 2, 1955, you may be able to use Form 1040-SR instead of the more complicated Form 1040. (Note: You don't have to be retired to file the 1040-SR.) Both forms use the same “building block” approach introduced last year that can be supplemented with additional schedules as needed. Taxpayers with straightforward tax situations should need to file only Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR with no additional schedules.

The senior tax return form generally follows the familiar 1040, albeit with slightly larger type for older eyes. It also has a chart for calculating your standard deduction — a good way to ensure that taxpayers 65 and older take the larger standard deduction to which they are entitled.

Congress mandated the 1040-SR because the previous simplified return, Form 1040-EZ, didn't accommodate some typical items for older taxpayers, such as Social Security benefits, IRA distributions, and pension and annuity payments. As such, older filers had to fill out the more complex 1040 form even though their returns weren't complicated. The 1040-SR does include those items. The 1040-EZ form is no longer in use.

Most tax-return software will generate a form 1040-SR; however, the form is most beneficial to filers who fill out paper returns by hand. If you use tax software to file taxes, as nearly 90 percent of taxpayers do, the software will choose which form is best for you. “If you are filing using a paper form, then there might be some benefit,” says Henry Grzes, lead manager for tax practice and ethics at the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. “If you are using tax preparation software, it really doesn't matter."

The previously advertised dress rehearsal performance of Matilda the Musical has been canceled.  There will be no performance for seniors on March 12. Cancellation is due to concerns over spread of the COVID 19 virus.

I have just received notification that the St. Patrick's Day Party at the Senior Center scheduled for March 18th and the Huntington Hills Theater Trip scheduled for March 25th have been canceled. No word yet on fitness classes, mahjong drop in and other activities at DeHart Community Center and Senior Center. Please post information on these activities if you have up-to-date information. If I hear anything regarding these or other activities included on the March event calendar here, I will share the information.

From Cathy Rowe:

Dear Seniors,

As the situation surrounding the corona virus continues to evolve, many activities and events are being cancelled. As of today, the Township of Maplewood has cancelled all town sponsored events as well as events in town buildings (The Woodland, The Senior Center, DeHart Community Center, 1978 Arts Center, The Burgdorff), including private events, through the end of March.

Community events are also cancelling. Please contact organizers or look at www.SOMATwoTownsforAllAges.org for info on cancellations or postponements.

The following have been cancelled:

  • Folk Friday at the Ethical Culture Society has been cancelled for March 13.
  • Durand-Hedden House has cancelled its event on Sunday, March 15.
  • The Congregate Lunch/Kosher Nutrition Program at the Village Apartments is suspended until April 17.
  • The trip to the NY Botanical Gardens on March 24 has been cancelled.

Latest from Cathy Rowe:

Hi All,Here is my corona update:I will add a page to my website dedicated to related corona infoThe towns have set up a go fund me account to help seniors with challenges during this time.I am working with the Parenting Center for grocery deliveries (they are setting up to deliver for kids on free lunch and have added seniors )A new Facebook group, SOMA Squad, is linking volunteers with people who need help - I will sue the go fund me account as needed to help with seniors who need them. For isolation - the South Orange Social worker is working on a way to connect volunteers with seniors in both towns for well checks. We are pulling phone records from several sources and will split it up among volunteers. Please encourage people to call on each other - physical isolation does not prevent phone calls and shouting at someone from your back yard!I will continue web page updates and e-blasts with information. Lets partner with whats already out there - as you know, our community likes to help and also likes to break off into splinter groups, so lets share info and keep directing people back towards me/the town.Meanwhile, if you know of seniors in need, please get their information and send it my way. We will be figuring this out as we go along, but we will figure it out.

March 14th update from Cathy Rowe:

Dear Seniors,

Following precautions, public and most private group events are being cancelled.

The libraries are closed in both towns through the end of the month. The libraries are encouraging people to use their websites for information and take advantage of the free apps you can access with your library card. Events including Ideas Fest and Makers Mayhem are postponed until a future date. SOPAC has suspended performances until April 17. Basically, assume any planned events through the end of March are closed.

Both towns halls will be operating but ask that residents conduct their business by phone or online through their websites. You can find forms, pay, register and much more on the websites. You can also call during regular office hours.

A page on www.SOMATwotownsforallages.org is being set up to convey information and news on getting through this trying time and will be live by Monday. Also, both towns are continually updating their websites. Now is a good time to sign up for town e-alerts, if you haven’t already done so. Information on how to do that is on their homepages.

The Senior Buses are continuing to run to help get residents where they need to go. If you need transportation out of town or out of the bus hours to doctor’s appointments, please call or email the contact info below. We know that people still need to get to appointments and go shopping, and are here to help get you there.

Financial Support

The towns have joined forces to create a Go Fund Me account for seniors who need support during this time. If you or a senior you know need help - groceries, transportation, deliveries, anything that is being disrupted by closings, we are here to help.

If you would like to donate, click here:https://www.gofundme.com/f/covid19-soma-seniors

If you need assistance - grocery or food delivery, transportation to a doctor's appointment or shopping, or to help with an service disruptions, please contact:

A Facebook group called SOMA SQUAD has also formed to match volunteers with residents who need help with deliveries and logistics during these closures. You can join their group to ask for help or to offer it. They have a dedicated number to call or text if you need help (732) 705-1420.

We are all in this together.

Note:  The name of the above referenced Facebook group is SOMA Squad - SOMA Quarantine. You can find them by using the Facebook search function.

Latest update from Cathy Rowe:

Dear Seniors,

As you have heard by now, both Maplewood and South Orange are severely restricting activities to help prevent the spread of coronavirus. At this point, assume all activities and events in March are cancelled until further notice. The town halls are operating but online or by phone. If you need anything you would have gone to townhall for, check out their website or call.

South Orange: www.southorang.org, (973) 378-7715

Maplewood: www.twp.maplewood.nj.us , (973) 762-8120

Many local restaurants are spacing out their tables or operating as take out or delivery only. Call before going out to see if your favorite place is open.

As an extra precaution, wear gloves when you go out to the store or places other people have been. Garden gloves, winter gloves or the ones you wear to wash dishes will do - and wash them when you come back home.

Transportation

As the senior buses in each town have been cancelled, we are offering rides through Gogo Grandparent. If you need a ride, please call (973) 558-0863 and we can arrange it. Note - Gogo Grandparent will connect you with Uber or Lyft and all precautions should be taken including hand washing etc.

Assistance

Thanks to the generosity of our community, a fund has been set up to help seniors in need. If you need help with food, transportation or anything else because of all the disruptions to services, please call (973) 558-0863, email: SOMA2towns@gmail.com or fill out the contact form on the website. All requests will be kept confidential.

Getting through this together

I suggest our seniors show our community how we can stay connected. Here’s an idea I saw from Italy - at 5pm every evening, everyone go out on your front porch and wave to each other. In Italy it turned into an opera sing-along in one town, but no pressure to perform yet.

What else Can you Do that is Safe?

Share your ideas for keeping busy and entertained - how are you spending your social distancing time? I will post on www.SOMATwoTownsforAllAges.org to share. Here’s what I have so far:

Take the time to fill out your census form! Go to www.2020census.gov or call 844-330-2020, or respond to the mail you receive from the Census Bureau.

Now is a good time to explore technology! E-books, Netflix, try HULU, facetime. I will post instructions on the website. If you need help figuring out technology, let me know and I will have a tech savvy volunteer call you and walk you through it.

Go on a virtual museum tour. Many museums let you browse their collection through their website

Check out what the libraries have online - movies, e-books, magazine subscriptions - all free with your library card.

Go for a walk - go around the block, or check out the repaved Crest Drive in the South Mountain Reservation, entrance at the top of South Orange Ave

Spend time outside - get a jump start on your garden

Call or email people in your groups that are cancelled, like mahjong, the library lectures and other clubs.

This just in from SOMA Two Towns For All Ages:As of March 19, all local grocery stores will be open to residents 60+ only from 6 am - 7:30 am. This allows for older residents to shop when the stores are re-stocked, leaned and less crowded.

From today's update from Frank McGehee:

Extra supermarket, located on Irvington Ave, will be open between 6:00 am to 7:30 am for seniors only. In addition, they will be offering free taxi service for seniors to get home with their purchase. The service will only take them home and there’s no minimum purchase. The services start today.

Kings Supermarket will also be reserving the first hour of shopping 7:00 am to 8:00 am for seniors and “high risk guests”.

Stop & Shop will also start the practice of being open between 6:00 am to 7:30 am and reserving this shopping time for seniors tomorrow morning.

Latest update from Cathy Rowe: Dear Seniors,I hope you are all well and getting outside a little every day to enjoy this beautiful weather. Here is the latest on changes and challenges during the corona virus disruptions:Stay Connected

One of our active, older residents has set up a new Facebook page for people to connect and share strategies - thanks Pearl! It is called the SOMA Seniors Silver Society and can be found on Facebook at

Tonight's email from SOMA Two Towns For All Ages:

Dear Seniors,

I hope you are all well. Usually, I send the eblast of next month’s events, but as you know, all public and large events are cancelled through April. Here is some new information and updates for you on resources and ways to stay active, engaged and safe. If you know other seniors who are not getting these eblasts, please share.

APRIL 1 IS CENSUS DAY!

Wherever you are living on April 1, 2020, is where you need to be counted by the U.S. 2020 Census. If you haven’t already responded, take a few minutes now to do your part and make sure we have an accurate count, receive our share of federal funding and adequate representation in the U.S. Congress. For more information, check out https://2020census.gov.

About that Newsletter…

The SOMA Two Towns for All Ages newsletter is on its way. When it was sent to the printer on March 16 - and that seems so long ago- the events and calendar reflected what we thought would be a 2-week period of social distancing. Unfortunately, this has expanded and every event planned for April is cancelled. We don’t have word on when we will resume normal activities. The trip to the Metropolitan Museum described in the newsletter is cancelled. But….you can still see the NYBG Orchid Show! Since the trip to the NY Botanical Gardens Orchid Show was cancelled, we can all see it on the NYBG facebook page. Enjoy a 20 minute guided tour at: https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=145671790151768

Does Any of This Seem Familiar?
This isn’t the first time some of us have seen quarantine, social isolation and epidemics. Last year, we interviewed several local residents and captured their memories in “A Time Before Vaccines.” This documentary presents their stories of growing up with polio, measles and other diseases we are now protected from. You can see it on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmjyQg3rPV8&t=12s

The NewsReord recently had a story of someone recalling the quarantines and early vaccines for the flu in the early 1950s. This practice has been around for centuries and carried out in different ways in different places. For a recent article from the University of Chicago on the practice of and lessons from Hawaii in the 1800s, see:

SOPAC News

SOPAC is looking ahead and rescheduling performances and events, so if you missed a performance, they may be coming back! The schedule is going from August out as far as February 2021. If you are interested in any of the shows, please consider ordering tickets now. The arts are going to suffer with no shows/ticket sales, so buying tickets (that will be refunded if the show doesn’t happen) can go a long way to support this local gem. Visit www.SOPACnow.org to see what they are up to.

Emergency Food Distribution Event

Essex County and the Community FoodBank of New Jersey are holding a food event to help people affected by COVID 19. The 2,000 boxes of food that will be distributed are meant to benefit families who have been forced out of work and are not able to afford to purchase food.

Date: Tuesday, April 28, 2020

Time: 10 a.m.

Place: Essex County Branch Brook Park/Cherry Blossom Welcome Center, Newark.

Residents who want to take advantage of this free giveaway must enter Branch Brook Park by the Heller Parkway entrance or other more southern entrances. Residents are asked to not arrive on site until 8 a.m. Vehicles that arrive before 8 a.m. will be asked to leave. The emergency food boxes prepared by the Community FoodBank of New Jersey contain enough food to provide for 40 meals. They consist of a variety of non-perishable food such as cornmeal, oatmeal, rice, fruit, peanut butter, jelly, shelf stable milk and canned vegetables, chili, soup and ravioli. Items may vary based upon their availability. The emergency food boxes will be distributed on a first come, first served basis. When residents arrive at the site, they are asked to keep their windows rolled up and to open their trunk. Volunteers will place one emergency food box into each vehicle.
