Will someone assist the senior, using the step stool to enter the van?

If the person has balance issues in the first place ----

The driver assists passengers now when needed.  Passengers also help each other.

Poor balance does not seem to be the current issue for most riders.  Mobility and vision issues are more common.  Even with the stop stool, those with severe mobility issues still will not be able to enter/leave the vehicle even with help.  What is needed is an accessible vehicle that is ADA compliant.

Saturday August 3rd Main Library at 3 pm.  Art talk by members of the Senior Studio, an art program for seniors with classes at DeHart Community Center and the Maplewood Senior Center.  Learn about the program, see work by students who have participated in the classes during the past year.  Stop by the main library building during the month of August to see work on display.

I may have been the first to use........or  one of the first.  Irene Dunsavage had conferred with Cathy Rowe over the problem some of us like me were having with van access and egress.  Jean is always helpful as he could be but that small running board on the van and lack of a steady hand-hold caused difficulties.

The step stool Cathy purchased is twice the width of that running board so the  foot can be placed upon it. The surface gives better traction than previously  Also there is a horizontal arm on one side that can  used to better gain purchase.  I think the device is reversible so the metal arm can be used by either one's left or right arm.

Device is light weight and certainly a good purchase.

Thank you so much for the feedback!  I am glad that the new device worked well for you.  My main concern was stability of the device as one was transferring from the stool to the vehicle.  I am glad this was not a problem for you.  While this certainly seems to be an improvement over what we had previously, it still does not provide an accessible vehicle for those who can't handle stairs at all.  Hopefully, the town will look into purchasing an ADA compliant vehicle in the near future.

 Joan,

I am no whiz at stair climbing.  After a major problem with a bulging disc,  where the EMT's had to carry me down a flight of stairs while I was wrapped like  giant hot dog.........and a heart attack,  at least I got to sit in the carry chair on that one...........the body simply lacks the strength it once had.  Plus maybe that is simply a function of getting old.

After placing one foot fully on the stool platform,  with Jean there to prevent falls,  the next step literally as you say is to place the stronger leg into the vehicle. This becomes the " boosting unit' so to speak to enter the bus

If that leg lacks the strength then truly more of a mechanical lift device is needed.

I don't need it but I have taken that kneeling bus provided by either the State or County.

For those seniors who did need it ...........it was quite handy.

You are of course correct.........a Senior transport vehicle should be suited to Senior use.

I just took a look at the Senior Programs Section of the Maplewood Township Official Website and found it so inaccurate and out of date that I ended up sending in an SDL Portal comment pointing out the inaccuracies.  At the present time, please do not rely on its contents.  I will post if/when the material has been updated/corrected.

Thank you so much to the town official responsible.  The senior programs page on the official town website is now substantively accurate and up to date.  Please consult it for information on senior transportation, fitness classes, senior club activities and other items that you may not see on this thread.  If you still cannot find the information you are looking for, post here or PM and I will do my best to get the information you need and get back to you as quickly as possible.

Tuesdays from 6 to 7 pm at the Woodland:

September 24 - October 29

Students will learn the basics of comedy improvisation and they’ll enhance other skills too such as impromptu speaking skills, listening skills, and being in the moment. Natalie Picoe and master improviser Joe De Gise II will be teaching the class. For more information about the class: visit http://www.hopeandwondertheater.org or call the Maplewood Recreation Department (973)763-4202.

If you go to the Art and Music Walk in Maplewood Village (Maplewood Avenue, Baker Street, Highland Place) this Sunday September 22, 2019 from 11 am - 5 pm, please stop by the SOMA Two Towns For All Ages booth to see work by Senior Studio artists, learn about programs and services of interest to seniors, let us know your own needs and concerns regarding aging in place in our community, and pick up the first in our new series of self guiding walking tour maps.  This one features an art tour of South Orange.  Hope to see you there.

The Maplewood Township Committee has just voted to create a Maplewood Seniors Advisory Committee (Ordinance #2844-16). Full text of the ordinance is available on-line at the official town website. At the same time, Maplewood, along with SO, is moving ahead with the Age Friendly Cities initiative (branded as SOMA Two Towns For All Ages), placing initial emphasis on infrastructure, community inclusion, and communication improvements; then moving on to other Senior-related issues. Maplewood and SO will be sharing a project manager, employed by Maplewood but funded jointly, whose primary responsibility will be to address the needs of seniors in our community. Both groups will be working to find ways to make it easier for Seniors to remain in our community as our financial, health, and social circumstances change with age. Maplewood has begun expanding programs aimed at Seniors that are being offered through both the Recreation Department and the Health Department. The town's zoning official and welfare director are also being brought in to work on Senior issues within their area of specialty.

There is so much that needs to be done in this area. Senior now or senior to be, please think of the programs, policies, resources, services you would like to see in place to help you remain in town now and in the future. Share them below. No idea is too big or too small. In fact the small ones are apt to be the easiest to accomplish. Please post your ideas here and lets have a discussion that could result in making life better for all of us.

If you are looking to get involved more directly, the local steering committee of the Age Friendly Cities Initiative is looking to get as many Seniors and providers or services to Seniors involved as possible. Please send a PM if you would like to participate and I will pass your contact information on to the program's interim coordinator.

I'm wondering if this is something still alive in 2019?

I'm wondering if this is something still alive in 2019?

Oh, originally this post said 2017!

It is very much still alive.  The Maplewood Seniors Advisory Committee was created by town ordinance and serves a means for the local senior community to be heard on a variety of local issues.  We meet monthly at the Senior Center to discuss programs, services, and ordinances both existing and prospective which impact seniors (and everyone else).  In addition to eleven voting members appointed by the township committee (we currently have a vacancy, if interested please PM me for information on how to apply), non-voting members include Cathy Rowe from SOMA Two Towns For All Ages (the age friendly initiative of Maplewood and South Orange), the TC member designated as liaison to the committee at the annual TC reorganization meeting (currently Dean Dafis) and representatives from the health, recreation, welfare departments and from the library.  Members of the community are invited to attend our meetings which are open to the public.  There is a period at the start of the meeting during which members of the public can address us on whatever senior-related issues are of concern to them.  Beware, unlike at TC meetings, members of the public attending often find themselves drawn into what ever discussions the committee is holding.  We also have scheduled meet the seniors advisory committee events, usually on weekends, where members of the public can ask questions and raise issues in a more informal setting.

From Cathy Rowe:  This year we have the opportunity to vote for three members of our Board of Education. It's an important role, as the BOE is responsible for setting school system policies and managing the superintendent. There are some big projects on the horizon for our community, including the facilities expansion & improvements and the integration plan. On Thursday at 7:30 pm the PTAs along with the League of Women Voters are hosting a candidates forum at the district building on 525 Academy Street. There is also a forum hosted by the Community Coalition on Race next Tuesday, Oct 29th at 7 pm at Marshall School. The BOE campaign of Erin Siders & Thair Joshua has offered to provide volunteers to drive seniors to either forum. Contact sidersjoshuaboe2019@gmail.com.
