New class for seniors: Writing on Paper, Fridays 1 - 3:30 pm, March 1 - April 5, 2019 (no class 3/15 or 3/22). Meets at Maplewood Senior Center. Fee: $20. Instructor: John Straus, writing teacher at Rutgers Newark. To register, call 973-763-0750 or register on-line at https://maplewood.recdesk.com/Community/Program.
Just curious, if you know - why "on paper"? Most people I know, including most Seniors, do most of their writing with word processing these days.
from Bob Roe: Joan, thank you so much for your updates on activities on MOL. It is a real community service. It also shows how many activities people can become involved with right here in Maplewood and South Orange.

I spoke with the instructor about that. He feels that writing on paper is preferable to writing via a keyboard. An added plus is that quite a few of our seniors do not use a computer and don't want to learn. This lack of computer comfort/literacy has posed a real problem in spreading the word to seniors in our community regarding programs and services that would be of value to them.

Well, I definitely disagree with on paper being preferable in general although I get that some seniors don't use computers (although fewer and fewer as time goes by.) My life might have been entirely different if there had been computers and word processing generally available when I was in college. When I think about some of the amazing courses I avoided because of the "mechanics" of writing long papers, I am so sad to have missed out on them (mainly history.)
SAC: The next session of Writing on Paper began on April 5, 2019 and will continue through April 26, 2019. If there wasn't interest, the course would not be continuing. Cost is $20 for the month's session. Class meets Fridays from 1:30 pm to 4 pm at the Maplewood Senior Center. Instructor is John Straus, who teaches writing at Rutgers-Newark.
Email from Cathy Rowe:
Several of you attend the NJTips@Rutgers transit classes last month and chose field trip destinations. Details of the trips below. If anyone who did not attend the classes is interested in joining, please rsvp by Wednesday, April 10 for the first trip or Wednesday, April 17 for the second trip :

I have been told that some teams are signing up with more than four members. If a team has more than four members only the top four scores will be counted and if such a team wins, only the top four scores will be eligible for the prize. I have also been told that more than 32 seniors can join the competition but only the first 32 will be provided with a pedometer. Additional competitors will have to provide their own.

I expect that many may have fitbits or similar so the pedometer limit should hopefully not be a big problem.

SOMA Two Towns for All Ages is proud to announce a speaker series focusing on the legal needs and concerns of older residents.
SOMA Two Towns for All Ages has joined the Essex Coalition for The Conversation of Your Life (COYL), a program of the New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute, to educate residents about important discussions to have and decisions to make in the event that you cannot speak for yourself. In addition, several local partners will hold and host events addressing discussions, planning and legal documents that should be considered beyond a will.
Beginning in April, dozens of New Jersey communities will be part of the COYL initiative to inspire and educate people about the value of advance care planning. The Conversation of Your Life (COYL), is part of the Mayors Wellness Campaign, a program of the New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute and the New Jersey League of Municipalities. “We are doing nothing less than changing the culture in New Jersey around end-of-life care,” said Linda Schwimmer, President and CEO of the New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute. “We’re bringing people together for thoughtful conversations that ensure their own end-of-life wishes are honored. And we help people provide the gift of clarity to their loved ones.”
What is advance care planning and why is it important?
Advance care planning consists of sharing your preferences for end-of-life care with loved ones and doctors and putting them in writing, so in the case that you are unable to speak for yourself, the health care treatment you receive is consistent with what you want. More than anything, advance care planning is a gift of clarity for both you and your family. Indicating your preferences for end-of-life care well ahead of time saves your loved ones from having to make emotionally taxing decisions on your behalf; instead, they can have clarity in their actions and focus on spending time with you.
Advance care planning can be daunting – not only because it is difficult for many of us to think about aging and death, but also because there are a lot of terms and forms that can complicate the process. Most people have a will, but do not make legal preparations beyond that.
Of particular interest in Maplewood in South Orange will be two events sponsored by Garden State Equality for June’s Pride month activities. According to reports by the International Federation on Aging, advance planning and legal documentation is a higher need yet lower use among the senior LGBT community. Without such planning in place, important decisions could, under the law, fall to estranged relatives instead of someone’s life partner. The topics covered in the Pride Month events on June 17th and 21st are important for and apply to all older residents.
The planned events are free and open to all. Note that some require an rsvp.

“Preparation for Aging,” 1- 3pm, The Woodland
Presented by Garden State Equality. Many older adults are aging without a plan in place. Issues around caretaking, power of attorney, wills, and other legal issues begin to come up and many older adults are unprepared to tackle these issues. This preparation workshop will help older adults to start thinking about a plan that is tailored to their needs.
June 21
SAGE Table: Dinner and screening of “GenSilent,” 6- 9pm, The Woodland
Presented by Garden State Equality. Why SAGE TABLE? To draw our community closer together, to alleviate the loneliness common to many LGBTQ seniors and to share stories and ideas. This is a space to begin a conversation about how we relate to people across age boundaries in our community, and how we can take action together. RSVP to Mayes@GardenStateEquality.org or 973-509-5428
