SOMA Two Towns for All Ages to host Transportation Summit

On June 6, SOMA Two Towns for All Ages will host a Transportation Summit with speakers and vendors focused on transportation options for older residents. Come and hear about the important role transportation plays in an individual’s independence and health.  Learn more about the South Orange and Maplewood Senior Bus services. Sign up for classes by AAA, NJTIP, and more.  Talk to local taxi companies, medical transports and EzRyde, get registration information for Essex County Services and Accesslink. The goal - for ever attendee to walk away with one new option for getting where they need to go.

Cathy Rowe, Coordinator for SOMA Two Towns for All ages explains the rationale for the summit: Transportation isn’t just about getting to doctor’s appointments or limited to the daylight hours.  Independence and being able to maintain an active, engaged and socially connected lifestyle has been proven to have positive impact on health  - both physical and mental - and longevity. Both Maplewood and South Orange provide free transportation for seniors during the weekday.  Essex County has free services for seniors to travel within the county. In addition, there are private options including local taxi companies, Gogo Grandparent, EZ Ryde Uber or Lyft to get you where you want to go when you want to go there.

We want to introduce residents to options to meet their changing and temporary needs.  Some people might not feel as comfortable driving at night or walking a long distance for parking, so using a local taxi company or having a Gogo Grandparent account might be a good option to have on hand.  People might need rides to  doctor's appointment just for a few weeks after a procedure, before they can resume their normal driving - there are free or low-cost options for that. Other people have no concerns about driving, but can learn how to adjust their car settings through a AAA CarFit class for maximum safety.

The range of transportation options is quite wide and there will be sign ups for future classes from AAA, and for learning about NJ Transit and public transportation.

The Summit will be held at SOPAC in South Orange.  Speakers and presentations will be from 10 am - noon, followed by a light lunch and time to meet with vendors.  Reserve your seat by calling (973) 762-8120 x 4005 or email:SOMA2towns @gmail.com.

from Bob Roe:  I( am also a very proud grandparent.  I used GoGo Grandparent recently and it was a very good experience.  Low cost.  Quick arrival of transport car.  Friendly drivers.  Got a pick up from train station at 11:00pm in just a few minutes to go home.  I think this private service solves lots of our Seniors transportation needs.

The link to the Maplewood Village Vision survey is now available.  https://goo.gl/forms/D7wONlJFmtKx2tj33

There is a lot we can do as a community to make the Village more senior friendly:  Make all storefronts accessible.  Provide daily senior bus service to/from the senior bus stop in the Village.  Designate the senior bus stop as a drop off point for all vehicles transporting seniors (where the driver is able to park elsewhere). Encourage businesses to join the Classic Card program. Bring back the Concierge service. Expand the General Store and provide for phone as well as Internet orders.  Provide for better traffic and parking enforcement to make crossing the street safer for pedestrians... and so much more.  The more seniors and senior-friendly responses received, the greater the likelihood that at least some of these changes can be made. Please take a few minutes to complete and submit the survey.  You need not be a Maplewood resident to participate.

Just got back from DeHart Community Center.  Phones are down. If you need to schedule a ride on the Senior Bus, please call Michelle at 973-763-0750 if you can't get through at the Community Center number.  Phone service to the DeHart Community Center has been restored 8/2/2018.

August art exhibit at the Main Library in Maplewood features the work of students in the Senior Studio program.  Paintings will be on display all month.  Please stop by and see what our seniors, many of who have never painted before, have accomplished. Art and Music Reception for this exhibit will be on August 25th from 3 - 4 pm.  Joan.....it is not on the printed schedule but has become sort of a de facto thing.  Every Monday and Tuesday  the Senior Bus will provide a ride to the newish CVS on Valley St. and or The Stop and Shop also on..... Valley....formerly the Pathmark.   973-763-5287

Author:  Thanks for posting this.  Monday and Tuesday are dial a ride days in Maplewood when the Maplewood Senior Bus will transport Maplewood seniors door to door to any destination in Maplewood or South Orange.  CVS and Stop and Shop is just one of the possible destinations where seniors can ask to go. Thus it does not appear on the event calendar as a fixed trip.
