 My children were born in 1962, 1964, 1966 and 1967.
I have had a life-long love for Frank Sinatra, Willie Nelson, country western music, Broadway musicals, opera, gospel, jazz, Django Reinhardt, Stephan Grappeli,  Hot Club of France etc. Watched the Beatles American debut live on the Ed Sullivan Show.  Bing Crosby was always on the record player when I was a kid.

Got locked out of a cancelled Bruce concert once  because of a severe electrical storm. Saw West Side Story,  Cats, King and I, Cabernet, among many other greats,  with the original casts.

All that being said, I stand by my very varied music appreciation. Do not feel culturally deprived nor “less than” for lacking awareness of other musicians.

Agreed! Especially when discussing individuals, like mtierney, and our expectations about their cultural awareness. So here’s another, joanne: How familiar are you with the Marvel canon? The comics have been popular for 80 years, and the movie franchise is a worldwide smash. Articles, both high brow and low, abound. Yet I can guarantee you that almost any term from the Marvel canon, even ones that are a lot more central to it than a single word in a logorrheic rock epic or chamber pop classic, would get past me without a smidgen of recognition.

 My comment was more centered around mtierney (spelling it correctly this time) stating the reason why she didn't get the Procol Harum reference is that she had 4 kids and presumably no time for Procol Harum. So did my mum. Obviously everyone has different experiences and likes different things. You are getting especially tetchy of late, DaveSchmidt.

Yeah, point appreciated. Much of it, probably, is me bristling at social media’s shortcomings in seeing things through the eyes of others (including the merits of a recent Jeopardy!-like comment). I’ll try to ease up.

So funny, the timing of my reading the comments re Marvel (and implied DC etc to include the recent female produced graphic novels & series/films), and our starting to watch a new series with breakfast... Series 3 of Runaways  

My D is a comics collector (he sold his original collection for the deposit on our first house, when we married over 30 years ago). So I've had to become far more familiar than I was ever comfortable with. But then, my first career was librarian, so it doesn't matter - it's all 'information' (the driving motif in my work-life) so however I accumulate the data and links is useful.  

Mtierney, we've been referencing the Procul Harum song Whiter Shade of Pale, which is a 60s classic. Well known for its classic organ opening and resemblance to Bach, and mysterious lyrics.  It's front of mind at present as it has poetic references to vestal virgins, drunken seduction, big parties etc. (Some people think there's a Chaucer reference but the lyricist insists he's never read Chaucer nor The Miller's Tale). 

We've also referenced the Queen's song, which also features mysterious lyrics, Scaramouche, classical orchestration as well as the rock band, a mini-opera setting and formulation (the song is in Acts).  Songs like these explain the swell in some popular fashion and decoration trends as well as movements in historical romance novels etc.

I'm sure I remember Readers Digest (where does the apostrophe go??)  and Time with articles trying to explain songs like these and MacArthur Park, and their drug/sex references and various parental warnings, in medical waiting rooms since the 70s. Then moving onto explaining the musical and artistic/literature references and structure (so older/other genre folk can understand) in the 80s.  Eh, my mind collects trivia. I'm always surprised that others don't recognise the 'clues' I've seen everywhere. 

Before we totally re-divert back to a purer discussion of current events, may I just say I found myself nodding at each artist mtierney listed, and clear musical memories of family 'concerts' flooded back? Either parent playing their favourite music, or watching a program, or taking us to a Sunday afternoon concert; my sister playing her jazz records or discussing the French music scene with my Maman and aunties... 

Eighteen years between my parents, and very different musical tastes. Most of a decade between my sister and me, and a massive difference there; I'm closer to my BIL's eclectic tastes. My brother is two years younger, and I privately laugh at what he listens to. His children prefer writing their own music.  Cultural influence is a big ocean, indeed.

Before diverting, one last music remembrance...

Twenty years ago, at my youngest son’s wedding reception in New York City, the time came for the groom to dance with his mother. As he escorted me to the center of the dance floor, surrounded by friends and families looking on, Willie Nelson’s voice filled the room, singing  “Always on My Mind”! I had had no idea that this song had been chosen. I began to cry and, as we danced around the room, cocktail napkins were being passed out by all these 20-somethings to wipe their tears away. Was hardly a dry eye in the house! 

We spent today listening to various calypso, tango and flamenco artists from the ‘40s to ‘90s. Picked at random, variety of languages, shuffled and streamed through my Freegal subscription. Funny to see D dance his way around the the house as absent-mindedly as his mindless singing, while he focussed on marking papers, mapping online course modules etc. (His work computers are spread out between his study and the dining room)

As long as we're doing random chat rather than solving the pressing issues of the day, I'd like to boast that my daughter qualified for and is competing in Atlanta this weekend for a spot on the USA Olympic marathon team.

Much will be made of comments made by Nancy Pelosi this morning. She repeatedly, and repetitively, stated that the Dems would support whoever is the nominee. So, if Bernie wins, his socialism mandates will get the support of House members. There will be no room for dissent in order to insure Democrats win in 2020.

I'm not surprised you don't understand.

What she means to get rid of Trump we will support whoever is the nominee. It does not mean there will be support for all of Sanders wishes such as M4A or any of the other nominees desires.

 The plain English meaning of what Speaker Pelosi said is that the Democratic nominee for President will be supported against Donald Trump.

What "room for dissent" should there be of that?
