Warning: DO NOT update an iPad 2 to ios9

Just installed the v.1 update: much shorter time required for installation (thank goodness) and so far, no discernible difference for me. But then I had no glitches with the v.0.

I was able to restore my iPad using this video. Good luck! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulqxl1gANyc

I updated to IOS 9 on my iPhone 5S and now I can't back up to the Cloud. Saw a forum with others complaining about the same problem.

I tried ios 9 on my ipad (ipad mini 2 with retina display) on Tuesday. It worked fine, and it seems fine, but I haven't had much chance to use the machine much since then. I'm downloading 9.0.1 now.

earlster, for reasons under Apple's control, updates generally work better than updates of other software. Certainly, they're not perfect, and when things go wrong, it can be as frustrating as things going wrong on other equipment. The narrower hardware diversity contributes to greater stability. There seems to be evidence that they test things better than other companies do, which is a contributor to the improved results.

Time for the Genius Bar

I suspect the problem with my still-bricked iPad 2 was that I attempted to upgrade to iOS 9 from an earlier (not the most recent) operating system. Still can't get the damn thing to work.

I always have to secretly chuckle when 'iThings' don't work super smooth and show the same problems usually only attributed to Microsoft products.
That said, getting a new OS or any big piece of software to update flawlessly on a huge variety of devices is always a daunting task for the developers and will usually have a certain percentage of failures. Waiting for the .1 patch is quite often good advice for anybody not dying to get the latest and greatest all the time.
As for @ridski Did you try to reset the iPad with iOS 9? Make a backup of your data and then basically go back to a clean install?

FYI: I did this, and it worked. Haven't had time to upgrade to 9.1, but it's there for those who waited.

Upgraded from 9.0 to 9.01 with no problems (Ipad mini) even though upgrade seemed to be primarily directed towards Iphone issues.

No problems for me, either. It has a stupid design element: the letters on the onscreen keyboard are lower case unless you are shifted into capitals. This is jarring to my eyes, because they've been capital all my life.

So ... should I take it to mean that it is probably OK for me to upgrade my iPhone 6 to iOS 9.01? I've been holding off, but I've passed my rule of thumb which is to wait for the .01 version and then a few days after that. My phone didn't even start to nudge me about this new version until the .01 version came along.

I haven't updated to 9 yet, but just as a point of information, iOS 9.0.2 came out earlier today.

So now my rule of thumb says to wait a few more days for the dust to settle on this one (since I'm still on 8.x.)

I updated my iPad Air earlier this evening (and am now typing this message on it), and my phone is updating now. No issues so far

It may be stupid to you, but it's helpful to others. I could never remember whether the shift key being gray or white meant that it was in caps mode.

This is the way it's always worked on Android devices.

@sac, I suspect that with new hardware such as yours, the upgrade is highly likely to go well. I went from 8.x to 9.0 and then to 9.01, and both upgrades went fine with zero problems.

@ParticleMan, I feel this keyboard display slows me down in finding the keys I'm looking for. That might be a mere perception, and in time, I will probably get used to it. I hadn't thought of that advantage you mention, so maybe I'll get to like it.

Tom,

It was weird for about a day, but it's quite easy to get used to...

Still not used to it after a week or two, but I'll try not to complain any more.

I upgraded to 9.0.2 today, and it seems fine. It was a very minor update, and I didn't even need it, but I did it anyway.

Are there enough differences between 8 and 9.0.2for it to be worth doing?

Tom, you are correct. It went without a hitch. I'm seeing and figuring out differences, but all seems fine. Also noting that keyboard difference and still getting used to it, but I do see the advantage.

I unbricked my iPad 2 following these instructions: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205239

I have a very recent MacBook Pro to which I was able to connect the bricked iPad for this solution. It took almost an hour but was successful. Haven't updated the iPad further to 9.0.2.

On the iPad 2 (important to note this is NOT the iPad Air 2 -- my particular iPad is 3 or 4 years old) it's still slow and buggy, even with the OS update. The hardware just isn't optimal for the new upgrade, and I read elsewhere that 9.0 is probably the last OS update that will apply to the iPad 2. But for now, if you bricked your iPad 2 but you have a newer Mac or MacBook or whatever, this solution should work. Good luck!

Beppolina, I just updated my iPad 2 to 9.02 from 8.whatever. The update was successful, but my device was still lagging pretty badly, so I deleted some 20 thousand Gmail messages and freed up a lot of space.

And then updated my apps, which took forever because I guess the system update required about 32 app updates.

Now the lagging is gone and my iPad is working fine again. All in all, worthwhile.

@beppolina, I'm glad you got it fixed. Boo to Apple for not testing and preventing this case, but yay to them for providing a fairly easy fix. Overall, I think they still do a pretty good job with hardware and operating systems. My big complaint about them is how often they expect us to replace our hardware, but I do understand their reasons. Supporting and testing all cases with old hardware becomes increasingly expensive, in fact, exponentially so, because the number of combinations multiplies.

If you navigate to Settings>General>Accessibility>Keyboards, the very first item in the list is a toggle that says "Show Lowercase Keys." Toggle that off and your keyboard will only show caps, like back in the day.

That's good to know, and thank you, but I've been convinced to get used to this, so I will.

Yeah, I like the new keyboard now that I've used it for a couple days. But I also like that we can choose
