Unique and Irreplaceable

I wonder what happened to the two benches in front of the old post office. I was the person who installed them on behalf of the Rotary club.

Last I heard DPW had them in storage.  Both of the persons commemorated by these benches were friends.  I miss them and the benches where memory of them resides.

That's great news. Thank you Joan.

Were you sitting when the demolition crew arrived? I hope you've recovered well. Would your buddy at village coffee know what happened to the benches?

 They're in my backyard

No I was sitting in preparation for doing a shopping at Kings........remember Kings,  the supermarket specified in the urban legend,  or was it a red herring that was sure to leave Maplewood unless they were offered a larger space in the village.   Thus the Post Office was sacrificed to fill that need.  And the rest is history

Anyway I will check with him later in the day as to his knowledge on the subject.

P.S.  Sorry MrIncreadable.............the Devil made me do it.

Maybe time lawnmower repair place on Springfield ave falls in this category. It's always my number one recommendation and I see it recommended here a lot. There are others within a short ride but this is more of a Maplewood institution.

I'm not sure Arturo's qualifies. It is certainly considered unique and irreplaceable among a certain subset of the local population but I'm not convinced it's as universally acclaimed as those people think.

Now, if you ask for the best diner in town you'll probably get more uncontested suggestions for the Park Wood. If that place disappeared I think it would affect a lot more people than Arturo's.

Jerry Buckingham is the very best.   I'd like to add plumber Anthony Massi,

Having moved to Florida a year ago I may have an added perspective on what is irreplaecable.  I'd like to add Bill and Harry's.  In the entire city of St Petersburg, Florida, even the entire county, we haven't found Chinese food that comes close to Bill and Harry's.  We haven't found Chinese food that's edible.  It's so bad that when I went back to Mapso in November for  a visit, my carry on luggage when I returned was all food from Bill and Harry's.   We've found great restaurants, but there's nothing like the Trattoria and nothing like Bill and Harry's. Although Crabby Bills on the gulf goes a long way to make up for it.

And the Parkwood.  We have a nice diner close by.  They have very good breakfasts and you can sit outside in January.  But it's not the Parkwood.  I miss the Parkwood.

Kims nails.  I wasnt quite a regular but I miss that too.

Maplewood online is also sorely missed.   Facebook pages don't come close.

Maplewoodstock.   They have a lot of festivals here. . They are very good,   all with music, food, art.  Jazzfest, Bluesfest, Ribfest, Gasparilla, Localtopia, Gay Pride, a monthly art walk.  From October through April there is a big festival every other week.  None of them compare to Maplewoodstock.

The community.   For the first time in my life I had a home town in Maplewood/South Orange.  When you live there and get involved you feel like a part of something greater than yourself.  I dont think that happens in many other places.

Although the weather in NJ sucks and the taxes suck even more,  there is nowhere on earth like Maplewood/South Orange.

how could I have forgotten to mention Maplewoodstock? grin

cheese Even I know Maplewoodstock is unique!

Since we're talking about the arts, I have to say that over the years I've envied your community arts programs. So rich and varied. When the annual Panto was added to the mix, written by locals, I really wished I could attend. My dream is to meet Daisy the Cow and get an autograph  wink

I wish you would stop saying things like this.   This is not a matter of opinion.   It is pure hyperbolic nonsense.

And again in deference to the mothers of America .......Non Lo Contendere

Anyone remember Fred Hodges the hauler? I bought a hoarder house and probably single-handedly financed his retirement. I hope he's still fishing in South Carolina.

Please don't turn this into another ******* post office thread.

Sadly, that seems to have happened.

maybe someone can persuade author to start a separate discussion to re-argue the post office development.

Not to give him a pass, but someone else dangled the bait.

Now, he didn't have to take it.

And other people could ignore his comments.

Thank you for inquiring as to my health.  I am just back from 6 great weeks in the Greek islands.

I wheeled a deliberately oversized suitcase over many a kilometer and up and down ferry ramps.

I have long felt that most of Greece is either up or down and sometimes both at the same time.

However if it was good enough for my ancestors with the 5 syllable names,  it is good enough for me.

US C.?

(Whoops, question withdrawn. They be Trojans, not Greeks.)

After Troy fell the city became Greek.  A prime piece of real estate.

You can find some really old archive stuff here - you can see some of the discussion titles - but they don't seem to work when you click on them - comment don't load:

I'll try to rebuild some of the indexes if possible.  You can randomly click on html files here:

And from 20 years ago:

Any luck on fixes? Where are the blogs?

BTW: Neither I nor the Oracle of MOL are represented here; my contention is that I shoulda been highlighted in Thread Drift, my true calling...

 I'm not there either LOL

Joel and JTA are, and so many lovely old avatars... thank you for bringing this back. cheese

The Aussie contingent aren’t in this pic, and a few other notables. But we made it into others  wink

I have a glossy of that. I’m on, glass of wine in hand.

Here in Australia it’s already 4 July.

I miss the days MOL held a F2F gathering, and read together the Declaration of Independence. There’s something special about this community acting as a large family of individuals with one purpose, cherishing values and traditions that honour equity and diversity.

Happy Independence Day, everybody! May it be harmonious and sunny!

Felicitations, USA!
