Top Songs of the 80's

I’m not great at embedding clips, however it seems a good day for revisiting Paul Kelly’s Dumb Things

Yaz was pretty quintessentially '80s.  (or Yazoo if you listened to them outside the U.S.)

where is Duran Duran?

 At home, I think.

It is kind of amusing to picture the various members as they proceed from late middle age into whatever lies beyond.

I really liked this.  These guys were a flash in the pan, it seems.  Don't know what happened to them.

Their last single with Nile Rodgers and Janelle Monae is amazing.

Yeah, one time several months ago I asked Alexa to play 80s music and this was the first song. I don’t know if I had forgotten about it, or perhaps I never knew it, but it has stayed with me. It’s been one of my more frequent one-off song requests since then.

or this one??

(Why do they all seem so appropriate for our politicians this week?)

I’m on weekend time now (not working until Monday), so Bedroom Eyes is always a fun track for this time on a Thursday or Friday evening. cheese

how can you not have Split Enz??

in the U.S., Crowded House was a lot better known.

this was probably the best known Splitz Enz song in the U.S., thanks to MTV

I remember this one vividly from seeing Split Enz open for Tom Petty back in the early '80s:

Antipodally sourced, and even more ubiquitous:

While I’m there, a pair of faves:

For the record, “I Got You” was out a year and a half before MTV planted its flag. I remember hearing it a lot on the radio during that time — and in an appearance on (gasp) “American Bandstand.”

When MTV premiered, they only had a few dozen videos, so they played what they had over and over and over.  According to SongFacts, I Got You peaked at only #53 on the Billboard chart, so I'd venture to say that heavy rotation on MTV brought the song to the attention of a lot more people than radio did.  In fact, there were 2 Split Enz songs among the first 30 videos played on MTV (although neither were I Got You).

But either way, I think we'd all agree this is the most well-known Split Enz song in the U.S.

As you wish. I was merely relaying a point of information and my own experience.

Brothers Finn are incredibly talented Kiwis and we're lucky to have their music in any decade cheese

If my 'Like' button worked on this iPad, I'd go crazy...

Did you know Hunters and Collectors, and Hoodoo Gurus? I know Yothu Yindi toured but I can't remember when; I think the Oils partnered with them a fair bit. (Songs like 'Treaty')

We also had a couple of fun a Capella groups but I can't remember the names...

Anyway, weren't Manhattan Transfer and Michael Franks doing some things we all loved to listen to at different times??

I came to them about a decade late, but I really like my Ghost Nation and Mars Needs Guitars! CDs.

Montreux '83. Pyramid.

Gd, I loved going to see them in Melbourne any weekend, or occasionally popping up to Sydney for the weekend and catching them there. (Sydney was more Galapagos Duck territory, tho) I'm such a David Hirschfielder fan, always have been, and David Jones on drums (he's still bloody terrific); Vince always seemed a full of himself but still... Pyramid was special
