The Mueller Russian Probe Thread

I don't know the story about Hersh and the New Yorker, but I do know that Jane Mayer isn't any "neocon" or "tool of the deep state".

My homage to Paul. A few years ago, The New Yorker rejected an investigation by Hersh into the operation that killed Bin Laden, which The London Review of Books ended up publishing instead.

I mentioned that article last week, on the #releasethedocuments thread.  I had watched an interview of the author, Jane Mayer, by Rachel Maddow earlier that evening.  I posted about it there because of one thing she said about the whole pro-Trump narrative that the GOP memo was pushing.  She said that the facts, about Steele's interest in Russian interference, and about what he knew about who he was ultimately working for, and what DNC knew about what he was doing, are all the opposite of the story pushed by the GOP and the Nunes memo.

I remember now that I did see your take on it. Didn’t mean to redirect. Caveat No. 1.

Mayer was interviewed about Steele on The New Yorker Radio Hour:

"The special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, has subpoenaed the Trump Organization to turn over documents, including some related to Russia, according to two people briefed on the matter. It is the first known instance of the special counsel demanding documents directly related to President Trump’s businesses, bringing the investigation closer to the president."

Consequently Vanessa Trump has filed for an uncontested divorce. No custody no assets. Same day as Mueller announcemet? Coincidence? Could they be moving to protect the money?

So all of those notes that Andrew McCabe wrote about Trump are now turned over to Mueller.

from The Wall Street Journal

Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe wrote memos describing his conversations with President Donald Trump and other events and has turned them over to Special Counsel Robert Mueller, a person close to Mr. McCabe said Saturday.

Cue that "Jaws" theme again.

Wish I could get the like button to work LOL

I am not following all of this? Does the President have any power or authority to fire Mueller or end the special investigation? Wouldn't that defeat the whole purpose of a special investigation?

He can indirectly as I understand it. This seems to offer some explanation of how it would work.

I'm pretty sure that if it were in his power he would tear down every US government institution to avoid prosecution.

What I wonder is if Congress will have the spine to stop him.

Although I have given up on Lindsey Graham he at least said again this morning that if Trump tried to fire Mueller it would be the end of his presidency. But the GOP seems to keep moving that red line.

" Libby has already had his right to vote and his bar license restored. This pardon is purely symbolic. I’m sure Libby’s happy to have it, but the audience here is Paul Manafort, Michael Cohen, and a slew of other people who can incriminate Trump."

"Three sources familiar with the investigation said the findings Mueller has collected on Trump’s attempts to obstruct justice include: His intent to fire former FBI Director James Comey; his role in the crafting of a misleading public statement on the nature of a June 2016 Trump Tower meeting between his son and Russians; Trump’s dangling of pardons before grand jury witnesses who might testify against him; and pressuring Attorney General Jeff Sessions not to recuse himself from the Russia investigation."

And speaking of pardons, Scooter Libby?

I signed up for this protest and will be alerted if Trump makes a move to fire either Rosenstein or Mueller.  I think one of the largest marches in the area will be in Times Square.  This will be a peaceful demonstration for we, the people: the top tier of our democracy.

Its a worthwhile protest.

I was stuck by the fact that with Syria, the Stormy Daniels court date, Michael Cohen, Comey's book, and the possible firing of Rosenstein or Mueller, that only a short time ago we were all focused on the school shooting and student protests. So much is thrown at us daily that we could just permanently do weekend protests and change the signs.  And with tax day upon us, I recall how fired up I was last year when my cry was "Show us your taxes."

The only thing that Trump hasn't gotten away with is murder, despite his attempts to kill freedom of the press.

Meanwhile, in the saga of Michael Cohen's files, the following report. https://www.cnbc.com/2018/04/16/trump-lawyer-michael-cohen-refuses-to-identify-clients-as-court-faceoff-looms.html

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An unnamed client of Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump's longtime personal attorney, is Fox News host Sean Hannity.

The revelation came after U.S. District Court judge Kimba Wood ordered Cohen to disclose the name in a court hearing on Monday.

In an earlier court filing Monday morning, lawyers for Cohen refused to identify the recent client — one of three people Cohen represented between 2017 and 2018. The lawyers also refused to identify the names of other past clients.

Lawyers for Cohen — whose business records were seized by FBI agents April 9 — said the then-unnamed client had told Cohen not to disclose his name and that they believed Cohen had a duty not to disclose it.

They also said that if Cohen's clients, other than Trump, were publicly revealed, it is "likely to be embarrassing or detrimental to the client."

Is it high level petty to cook a stew and roast some popcorn? Because I’m doing it.

Sean Hannity just responded that he never hired Michael Cohen as his lawyer, but that everything they discussed should be protected under attorney-client privilege. So why would Hannity insist on the fact that he never hired him as a lawyer?

It's conceivable you could consult a lawyer and not hire him.  The consultation would still be be privileged.

Hannity said that he talked with Cohen and asked his advice a number of times, "mostly" about real estate.  If he had multiple conversations, and requests confidentiality as he has, it seems to me that an attorney client relationship has been established in fact, whether or not a contract or payment for services has occurred; and he was identified as a client of Cohen in court.  Meanwhile, to criticize the search warrant and seizure of Cohen's documents on his show, without announcing his secret relationship with Cohen for which he is demanding confidentiality, appears to be a conflict of interest, and breach of journalistic ethics, at least.

Point of fact: Sean Hannity is not a journalist.

Hannity says his relationship with Cohen was "minimal;" just real estate tips every now and then, maybe some slip and fall jobs with a ten buck retainer.  Nothing to see here.  grrr

I don't know if anyone asked this question, but where exactly was the real estate he was asking about?
