Rain.

we're above Wyoming, where sometimes the elevation difference can mean the difference between snow sticking and not. I saw our neighbor literally sliding down the hill (I think for fun?), a taxi try to get up the hill twice and then slide back down (onto Wyoming!!!) and a pickup truck and a school bus both spun out almost into people's yards. The school bus is still stuck, the guys trying to get it out are sliding around like crazy. While some roads are okay, some are DEFINITELY not. Please be careful out there! Really glad for the delayed opening.

I know exactly what you mean -- i'm above Gregory and folks never believe me that the elevation difference makes for a notable weather change oh oh

Eastbound express lanes of 78 on the hill coming down from Summit were closed for salting at around 7:45.

Euclid Ave was dangerously icy at 7:45.

So, definitely a good call to delay opening.

Would walking in the street be safer than on the sidewalk?

Not today. I tried and went back to the sidewalk.

Any update as of 9 am? Getting ready to wake the kid and move out. Delayed opening was a mercy. Is it still raining?

Stayed overnight in Amherst instead of heading straight through to South Orange, and felt very smart about this strategy of waiting for the weather and temperature to me more favorable when we arrived in NJ. Only problem is I didn't take into consideration what the weather/temps would be here in Amherst at this time in the morning. We are experiencing what you are experiencing, and the boss wants to leave instead of waiting a few hours for it to warm up. Oh well. I'm sure traveling this morning is better than it would have been last night.

Good luck to everyone out and about!

The issue is that, although the air temperature is well above freezing, the ground is still well below.  So, like the proverbial tongue on a flagpole, water is freezing on contact with the ground.  this is causing black ice, and the re-freezing of already treated surfaces.

When the Suburu got stuck in the driveway, the wife came back in and texted the office.  We salted, and will try again with copious kitty litter in a few minutes.

on a positive not about the recent weather -- we haven't seen any frozen pipe threads pop up, which is good news considering the bitter cold we experienced for a couple of days!

They were all on Facebook with the newbies.  People on MOL already know what to do to prevent it.

;-D

It is still icy out there. Hubster shoveled the walk up to our front door earlier this a.m.  he went out a few minutes ago and almost fell as he slipped down to the front sidewalk.  Be careful.

I started to clear the slush off the front steps, realized that what was underneath was ice, and gave up. Just threw a couple of handfuls of salt down on the sidewalk in front of the house.

Currently heavy, warm rain with some wind in Philadelphia, and it's heading your way.

Like a different universe, isn't it? I got to Trenton and there was just warm rain. No slush or anything.

Husband said the sidewalks at MMS were complete ice, and kids were sliding around. That sucks. Hope no one fell or was injured. They were a lot worse than our sidewalks, for some reason.  The stark temperature increase feels so strange to me. Funny how downright balmy 43 degrees feels after last week!

There were a lot of people walking in the streets this morning, making for a fun commute (some were walking 3-abreast).

Seems like we have a week of warm-ish temperatures coming. Does that mean good news for the ice to melt soon? Doesn't look like it's dipping much below freezing even tonight but who knows how accurate my little phone app is!

I know exactly which facebook thread you're referring to with the 'newbies' comment smile

and yes I agree, here we have learned from the experience of others more than on one occasion oh oh

It was especially unwise to walk in the streets this morning given that in some places, cars couldn't really stop even if they wanted to.

Was about to go out and do some shopping--school vacation day here in Morristown.

One look at the Biblical deluge and hurricane wind gusts, and I have rethunk that thought.

Yikes!!!

It's horrible!  I'm in my office but want to just curl up and sleep.

The rain is moving through fairly quickly.  The ice is mostly gone, and the rain will be too.

Yay!

The street ended up being the safer alternative along my route this morning. I left the house around 8:15 am with a 9:00 am ETA.  Distance to cover equaled approximately 4 blocks.  Sidewalk was dangerously slippery even on a relatively flat surface so I ended up walking in the street, which was not bad.  S. Crescent was ice covered but that ice was mostly crunchy slush.  Valley and Baker were completely clear to the black top with no apparent icing.  On the whole not nearly as bad as I thought.  I was nearly at my destination when the rain started.

Yes, thank goodness; I've been hitting the refresh button every few minutes as I monitor the radar map while vacuuming water in my basement.

Even at 11:30 AM there were still strange iced sections on the sidewalk to my sons' school...all the cold frozen into the ground took a long time to dissipate.

We made it. Poor visibility for part of the way, but better warmer rain than black ice. So thanks Max!

Saw this on Facebook....had to share in this thread!

LOL! When I left work tonight there was a damp breeze blowing and I thought, "this feels like a cool night at the beach."

afa, that's hilarious! grin)
