Rain.

Definitely be careful out there - I hit two icy patches while driving very slowly! I did not see any salt trucks out but that was about an hour ago.

is it wiser to snow blow pre-rain or let rain mix with snow and blast later?

Wanna give the new Cub Cadet a run before the 60-gree weather tomorrow!

Doesn't look enough to bother with the blower. Assuming it's still on track to be freezing rain overnight followed by warming and pouring rain, I'm leaving it alone entirely.

We will get a layer of ice over snow, so it will might be a good idea to clear walks and drives in the early evening.

Wouldn't that just leave a thin sheet of ice on the walks and driveways by the morning?   I would think it preferable to leave the snow with a layer of ice.  That will give more traction and melt by itself later on in the day Tuesday.

What am I missing here?

I'm leaving it be. It may be a little sloppy before the rain comes but overall I think its safer. Definitely not going to be a snowblower event. Its a borderline shoveling event.

go ahead and give the cadet a run-you know you want to!

Leaving it alone and letting the rain wash it away.  As a pedestrian, I have found the footing to be much better on lightly-snow-covered sidewalks than on sidewalks which are cleared and then ice over (even with salting).

Changeover happening at least as close as New Brunswick/Piscataway, with sleet falling and ice forming on the roads.

I would assume it will happen soon here, which would be more or less on schedule.

Be careful out there!

NWS says:

Tonight
Snow and freezing rain before 9pm, then rain or freezing rain between 9pm
and 3am, then a chance of rain after 3am. Temperature rising to around
42 by 5am. Wind chill values between 20 and 25. Northeast wind 5 to 7
mph becoming calm. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Total nighttime ice
accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible. Total nighttime
snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Tuesday
Rain, mainly after 9am. High near 57. Southeast wind 7 to 16 mph. Chance of
precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a half and
three quarters of an inch possible.

The dry slot between 3am and 9am worries me.  We need the warmer rain to remove any ice.

I'm with Joan.

Yeah we were driving around 6. It was messy. Much sloshier and parts more slippery than I expected.

Roads were not being cleared.

There is nothing more terrifying to me than driving in icy conditions.  I avoid it at all costs and follow winter weather reports religiously when icing may be a factor as it is tonight.  Also, the hairy situation of pedestrians near or in the road when cars are slipping and sliding is heart stopping.

It has changed over in South Orange. I went to take out the garbage and it was raining, and while I agree with Joan that sometimes it's easier to walk on the snow, I couldn't help myself. I shoveled and salted...

Now I'm wondering about a delayed opening...

Yes, it's changed over.

The radar and short-term models are showing a dry slot -- we could be in for several hours of light precipitation.  Everything on the ground is freezing/frozen.  Everything that falls over the next several hours will freeze.  Tomorrow morning depends on what happens after midnight.

If the NWS is right, and we hit 37 by midnight, then any rain at all will start to warm the ground, and a steady rain will erase the ice.  This is a nowcasting situation, so we will just have to wait and see.

28 and still dryslotted after an hour.  radar looks exciting, though.

If the radar is right, there is some heavy precipitation about 1/2 hour away, maybe less.  Get off the roads if you can.

it's a mess out there -- here is what that mess looks like on a map

Yikes! Be safe everyone!

Hubby has been at Newark since 5:30 - flight delayed nearly 4 hours - pilot has not taken off - asked for the plane to be de-iced twice.  Unnerving!

yeah, that would freak me out!!!

35 degrees here at 5:30 am.  Much of what fell as snow yesterday has been washed away.  Plan on salting around daybreak if slippery spots persist.  Should be fun on the hills early this am whether walking or driving.

Delayed opening for Maplewood/ South Orange schools (2 hour delay)

Rapidly rising tempuratures and rain today will de-ice the roads at some point this morning.  Local icing conditions will persist.  Please be careful.

The sidewalk on our hill is covered in slush. The dog lacks his usual morning walk enthusiasm but it's not overly slippery.

I just arrived in Mt Vernon from South Orange.  All of the major roads are fine. Local roads still have some ice.  Watch out for plows and joggers.

Drove from South Orange to Newark Penn from 6:45 to 7:15. As FilmCarp said, the side streets are icy/slushy, but navigable. Any major street is clear, and 280 was slow but steady. Dashboard temp read 38 degrees in South Orange, 47 degrees by the time I got to Newark.

Walking is more treacherous than driving.  Driving was fine.

Would walking in the street be safer than on the sidewalk?

I'm pretty sure it never is. But people have to judge for themselves.

Can you just wait a few hours?  It's going to be warm enough today that much of the thin/black ice type stuff should go away.
