New Bookstore in South Orange

Gotcha.  The books I could see looked specifically religious but again I was just peering through the windows.

At any rate I'm happy to see an active renter in the space.  It's nice to see that end of South Orange Ave a little brighter.

Wasn't there another religious bookstore on SOA on the block where Harder's Locksmith is?

Yes there was. My MIL used to go there. It was where the AT&T store is now.

They clearly did their market research and picked the perfect town to put a spiritual bookstore

sigh.

Really? I'm curious why you would say that. I've never found South Orange to be particularly hostile to religion or spirituality.

A serious bookstore devoted to religious studies might be interesting (although the market could be a challenge).  A store that specializes in gift editions of the NIV and angel trinkets, well that is something for which I (personally) have absolutely no use.

What if by some miracle the coffee is good?

Then we'd have to go there for the coffee.  grin

One bad sign already is that it looks like they are keeping the old awning, and scratching out the name of the place that was there before. Never a good omen if you can't even afford a new awning.

I wouldn't worry too much, one could sell $20 bills for $1 in that retail space and still close down by June.

well, they are going to have stiff competition. I am selling $20 bills for .75 as soon as the ink dries.

Perhaps there are exceptions but my experiences with Church coffee does not inspire hope.

We're approaching a thread convergence with the Starbucks red cup thread.

I think you mean Satan Cups

Now that you mention it, this is the perfect way to put Christ back into coffee. Problem solved.

There are many churches up and down S.O. Avenue from here to Newark. I'm sure the Newark area doesn't have a bookstore like this. And there's a small church on Valley that has a banner announcing its celebrating it's 100th year (??). So there's a market here for sure.

Wondering if it's a Christian bookstore or will it cater to a few faiths?

I have yet to see an interfaith religious bookstore.  In general, these places are decidedly Christian and, in most cases, specifically Protestant.  Think "Jesus Christ: CEO" or "Chicken Soup for the Vegan Soul".

I walked by today and they still have not opened but I have to say, for a bookstore cafe, they sure don't have many bookshelves or food cases.  They did, however, have a book by Herbert Armstrong, the notorious LA cult leader, prominently displayed on a table in the window.  Pretty weird.

Is this area of the downtown zoned for cults?

Yikes.I hope they don't pull in any disaffected middle schoolers.
