Landscaping

How about we throw in gas powered snow blowers. Yeah, that makes sense.

Wow, there are a lot of people home during the day while I spend 12hrs a day at work and don't have much time to see my children, Pitty to you all.
It's not the lawn mower making the pollution, it's all the cars, trucks and bus that we all use everyday for a convenience. Don't get me started on backyard fire pits you all install and big factories with smoke blowing all day.
Landscapers are hard working and trying to raise there family's and you all threat them like they are pieces of s..t. Maybe you should all move to a much more rural area and not the sub-burbs!!!
Sorry but get a life and get over it. It is the same story year after year.

and the cattle. don;t forget the cattle.

MsApril. We have used Carmine's for many years now and are very happy with the work.

Check out the posting histories of Carol Greeley and Don Bates. Both seem to post only about landscaping and masonry and both strongly and repeatedly recommend Carmine's Landscaping.

And they both seem to use the same phrases to describe Matt. I'm not saying they are the same person - Don Bates has better spelling and grammar.

But it's pretty interesting to see such loyal customers, whose only area of interest on M.O.L. is recommending Carmine's Landscaping.

I'm just sayin'.

@MsApril My husband's name is Andy and he owns JK Lawn and Landscaping. It's best to reach out early to get a spring cleanup scheduled because they get really busy in the spring and you want to make sure any maintenance you want to do is scheduled properly in the growing season. (And not for nothing, they end up working 12+ hour days in the spring and fall so it's more difficult to get a return phone call during the busiest times.)

You can reach him at andrewkielich@gmail.com or 908 868 4588.

Thanks for the shout out @new207040 and @soorlady!

Actually, the small motors that power gas lawn mowers and blowers PER HORSEPOWER are far dirtier than cars, trucks and busses and orders of magnitude dirtier that even the dirtiest coal plant.

Again, I have nothing against the fine people who work for landscapers, I would just like to see them use tools that are less harmful to themselves, people around them and the environment as a whole.

@jersey_boy good catch! add username eni to the list of MOL personalities whose comments solely support Carmine's. Just popped up on another thread within 20 minutes of Carol's post here.

LOL. Carmine's must be great to inspire such fanatical loyalty.

So we're not supposed to publicly use gas or electricity in Maplewood or make outside noise? And if your neighbor tries to take care of their lawn or garden and pays for someone to help they are a "bad neighbor"? I find this line of thinking more disturbing than the sound of 100 lawnmowers!

I would recommend El Quetzal. Gilmar and Lucy are our neighbors, they maintain the lawns of a number of people on our street, and they've done several landscaping projects for us. (Though we mow our own lawn.) I really like that they're a local family business, and are therefore much more considerate than some of the other crews I see on our block (to address some of the previous comments.)
Gilmar - El Quetzal - 201-213-6603.

One of the first signs of spring on Maplewood Online:
The search for a new landscaper/lawn maintenance company and then
The perennial issues with noise dust trucks blocking the streets.
It's a sign that winter is almost behind us.

No one said any such thing. There is a mild wish for leaf blowers that are less noisy and a bit "greener". That is all. Try to calm down.

I wish I had a recommendation for you... But if you find someone good who shows up and is responsive to your emails, ease share! I've had a string of rather bad luck with landscapers since I moved here 1.5 years ago.

When you do hire a lawn maintenance crew, maybe you can stipulate that you don’t want them using blowers outside of the fall leaf season.

Noise and pollution notwithstanding, most homeowners and many mow-and-blow guys don't realize blowers do more harm than good in your yard during the growing season. The stray leaves and natural debris that end up on your lawn and in your shrub and flower beds break down and provide nutrients to your soil, provide shelter for pollinators and other good bugs and supply nesting material for birds. Blowers blow all that away, along with the top, most nutrient-rich layer of soil, send weed seeds everywhere and expose buried seeds to the light they need to sprout and the shallow roots of azaleas and other shrubs to light and air that dries them out.

I understand the need for lawn maintenance crews where people don’t have the time, inclination or a teenager to do it themselves, but I think the wanton use of blowers during the spring and summer should be stopped.

And you don't even want to know what blowers do to dog excrement and dried urine!

I've had neighbors who used a lawn service and those who did it themselves.

Typically the lawn services were more noisy but done in 30 or 40 minutes (time is money!). The do-it-yourselfers were somewhat less noisy, but the lawn mower and/or string trimmer and/or (slightly less noisy) electric leaf blower would be running for well over two hours - and it was always on the weekends when it was most disruptive. And 100% of the time, the neighbors who used the services had nicer-looking landscapes.

I'll take the lawn services any time.

Lawn services don't make any noise at all if you work in the city all day. Of course, if you are stay at home and trying to get your baby to nap, its a totally different story.

All of this is ignoring the fact that the work lawn services do could be done with MUCH quieter equipment.

Amen. I have never been able to get any of the recommended landscapers I've found on MOL to either show up or follow up. I cannot fathom how you run a business this way. With the exception of some of the bigger places, such as Carmine's and Anthony's. Good luck!

OMG me TOO!! I thought there was something wrong with me. Glad to know I'm not the only one! I had a visit from Jeff's Landscaping today and he's going to send an estimate; so I'll keep you posted on that!

I think people need to be more empathetic towards landscapers in this community. A lot of people on this board seem to think that landscapers use loud, noisy, and inefficient equipment purposefully and without care. The reality is that the loud blowers are way more effective and efficient then the lower range blowers. The larger lawn mowers can cut 5 to 10 times faster then the snapper you have in your garage. This area, Northern NJ, plays host to probably one of the most competitive landscaping markets in the country. There are literally hundreds of landscapers competing against one another in essex county alone. Using less efficient equipment that extend the time a landscaper spends cutting a house equates into higher costs for the landscaper. The landscaper then passes those costs on to the consumer (us), the majority of whom are constantly looking for lower prices. It simply isn't viable business option for landscaping owner to have their maintenance crew physically hand rake homes or use non-powered equipment. I'd rather deal with a quick and loud maintenance crew go to town on one of my neighbor's yards for 10 minutes every other day or so, then listen to my other neighbor spend his Saturday and Sunday pretending he's the arborist of the year by taking 4 hours to cut his lawn with snapper and trim his hedges with a grossly undersized hedge trimmer. Also, as stated by someone earlier, the homes that are professionally maintained tend to look way better then those homes that are maintained by the homeowner.

Another vote for @annemarie husband :-D

And most of these businesses are small and the owner is working alongside their crew, often 12 hour days, then to come home and write up estimates and do billing. As hard as they try, things do slip through the cracks.

If Andy ever drops the ball in terms of responsiveness, please reach out to me and I will prompt him. I see how hard he and his employees work, and they do an excellent job. I apologize if phone calls were not returned.

Thank you @harleyquinn! I know you know what it's like!

This is why the problem needs to be addressed by regulation instead of being left to the market. I am sure many of the workers at these companies would love to bring home a paycheck AND retain their hearing. Lets not even go into the health effects of long term exposure to high levels of particulates.

The worst was when our son was a baby and these ack jasses would start up with the gas blowers at 7:55 twice a week. We had double pane windows but it woke the baby every time. I can't recall the name of the company but they had red trucks.

Thankfully, we now have better neighbors.

Why are they "Jackasses" because they are doing their job?  Just because you're annoyed by it doesn't mean they are "jackasses."  I'm annoyed by all of the route 24 Traffic going west in the morning at 7:55am, however that doesn't make all the drivers "jackasses."
