Big Rainstorm (was Tropical Storm) (was Major Hurricane) Ida

I’ll be interested in seeing the debris line in Memorial Park up along the river banks  tomorrow.

Rahway River in Springfield just reached “ moderate” flooding stage, with steep upward slope to the feet vs time curve.

Just had to return from a significant event. The floods at Dunnell  Road are shocking. The river has overrun onto Dunnell. just about totally impassable.

As friend across from millburn mall is flooded in.

We are getting hammered here. Millburn Ave is a running stream near Trader Joe's now. Too bad I can't post video

Upload it to YouTube if possible- we don’t have streaming capability here.

I truly did get a tornado warning here in Maplewood. Husband and son didn't. Same provider (verizon if that matters.) They laughed at me. We were all in the basement. A friend in Westchester, same thing, she got one, her husband didn't.

maybe they have alerts turned off.

Same thing happened here -- I received a tornado warning on my phone around 7:30pm, but no one else in the house did.  Then around 9pm, my husband received a tornado warning on his phone. We have the same provider, Verizon.  Neither warning actually specified what area the warning was for.

A few years ago we bought a weather alert radio, and tend to trust it more than the cell phone warnings.  We receive watches and warnings on it for Essex and Union counties.

when is this rain expected to end?  seems like the worst is behind us?

From weather channel

It seems to be slowing in intensity now. I stopped counting how many shopvac buckets I’ve dumped down the slop sink over the last 3 hours.LOL

Way over the banks, over the duck pond, and up to the baseball fields.

Yeah, that's what I saw on Twitter, too. Yeesh! And that is up the hill from where the river cuts across Millburn Ave.

Here's the vid in case the FB link doesn't work:

I went out for a tour at 11pm.   Incredible sights.

The area where Millburn Ave. meets Vauxhall is completely under water.  The old abandoned gas station over there is part of the river.

Downtown Millburn is severely flooded.

Downtown South Orange is completely flooded.

Many streets in Maplewood have trenches filled with large rocks...and many of those rocks are now sitting in the middle of various roads.  It's a huge obstacle course getting anywhere.

Before Sandy there was a storm that severely flooded many of the homes behind the Jacob Holly Funeral  Home.    Given the flooding I saw tonight in that area I can only pray that those folks are okay.

I've been home cleaning up water in my basement for hours. Not sure who you saw.

Looks like it's done out there. There's a chill in the air now.

Looks like Millburn will have a huge cleanup ahead. I wonder how bad it is in South Orange. Lots of businesses on that stretch right by the river. I have to imagine Orange got hit too.  The river is so narrow along there in some places.

I can only say "Holy Mackerel".

I took a short drive around South Orange. Or tried to. North Ridgewood was barricaded near Orange Lawn Tennis club. I went across Montrose to Vose Ave. Power was out along Vose.

There was an abandoned car at the intersection of Meadowbrook Lane and Meadowbtook Place. I saw another one on Mead Street by the train trestle. There were three more on South Orange Ave by the Exxon station. I hope all those folks got to safety.

Lots of torn-up bricks and gravel in the road on South Orange Ave.  Lots of police vehicles out and about so I didn't stay out long. They don't need me in their way.

I took one picture of the Exxon Station.  You can see one of the big concrete planters on its side.

I got one too.  My cell phone does not have a local area code.  That may be why I got the alert.

Thurs 9/2 Update

Rain has left the area, however, the entire region remains under a Flood Warning. Specifically to MAPSO, the Rahway River remains above flood stage by several feet this morning, which means low-lying areas of South Orange, Maplewood, Millburn, and Springfield remain flooded. Use caution on the roads, flowing water can trap and move cars. There were a number of reports of people having to be rescued from cars stranded in the floodwaters.

Today, we should get the sun back by mid-morning. Breezy, with 15mph winds gusting to 25.

Gosh what a disaster.  I don't know how it works, where the high and low points are exactly, but we live just a couple of blocks from TJ's into the neighborhood across Millburn Ave. and we were not flooded.  We were not flooded during the past two mega storms over the decades.  People farther in and downhill not so lucky.

Thinking of you all, hoping you stay safe. Watch out for wobbly trees and branches, and insecure electrical poles and wires! (We always warn each other, here, to watch out for waterborne wildlife - snakes, crocs, etc. Would you have anything trapped in floodwaters to watch for?)

Hey, we're over on South Mountain Road. Howdy neighbor!

Valley leading to I78 is blocked.

3 abandoned cars in Vauxhall/Millburn Ave intersection

Photo is taken on Milburn Ave, near Bernie's Motorcars.

  • A towtruck had just pulled car A off the top of car B.
  • The pick-up had apparently just floated up on the lawn.

The above post shows Newark received 7.88” of rain in 6 hours. I’m curious to find out the calculation of what that would translate into snow accumulations had it been some freak storm in February:0
