How about streaming movie recs?

jeffl

we have a great thread about TV series.  How about one for movie recs?   I’m in the middle of a the Free State of Jones, a civil war story.  Did to get great review but I’m finding it entertaining.

What cha got?

I'm throwing this out there because I found it in the "free" movie section of Fios and otherwise never heard of it.  Not sure it was even in theaters.

"Ideal Home" with Steve Coogan and Paul Rudd.  They play a gay couple that ends up having to foster a young boy.  Funny, foul mouthed, but ultimately "feel good."

Marie

“Belonging”, a British film about mid-life crisis, and the sandwich generation. Wonderful cast.

I think was mentioned elsewhere -  we really liked the latest Coen Brother movie on Netflix - The Ballad of Billy Scruggs:

I also liked one of Burt Reynolds' last movies which is on Amazon Prime - The Last Movie Star:

I loved it in spite of the fact that I thought a couple of the chapters weren't that great.  I loved the prospector story, the singing gunslinger, the wagon train one LOL, the most.

jersey_boy

I just saw "Get Out." Then I re-watched it two more times. Very, very good. And, it broke records with its Rotten Tomatoes score, so it's not just me.

Tom

Please include the service that provides the title you recommend.

Good idea, Tom.  For any that aren't identified here, I think imdb.com often lists services where a movie can be seen.  Don't know how accurate/up-to-date.

apple44

First Reformed (Amazon) with Ethan Hawke, written and directed by Paul Schrader and Private Life (Netflix) with Kathryn Hahn and Paul Giamatti, written and directed by Tamara Jenkins

First is bleak, somewhat Bergman-ish, so it's not going to be for everyone ... second at first looks a lot like other movies (married couple in NYC) but is smart and has some twists

Roberto

The Gift.  Jason Bateman, Rebecca Hall and Joel Edgerton on NFLX.

totally fukced up movie.

Mentioned this on another thread - Happy as Lazzaro (Netflix). Written and directed by Alice Rohrwacher.

 My favorite chapters too.

Plus a thumbs up for The Last Movie Star.

I recently saw “Searching” on an airplane and it was one of the most unique and captivating movies I’ve seen in a while.

boomie

Thanks for that apple.   It is definitely going on my list.

Three Identical Strangers.  Amazing and fascinating documentary about identical triplets separated at birth, and the dark secrets surrounding the events. In Amazon prime video I believe.

Yeah, this is a special movie. Very bizarre. Worth watching.

It looks like CNN will be airing it soon too. They've been showing ads recently.

ETA: Premieres January 27 at 9 p.m. ET on CNN

Jamie

On HBO: The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling

Incredible footage put together by Judd Apatow.  Not sure if you need to be a Garry fan or not to appreciate it.  I am and i did.  grin

boomie

I wasn't the biggest fan but loved that one.

Jamie

The documentary - Fyre: The Greatest Party that Never Happened on Netflix is great!

Jamie

just saw this one - great concept - well done.  It's 99 cents on amazon.

Jamie

The Dawn Wall on Netflix is excellent!
