65 degrees inside my house is quite chilly for some reason but I'm one of the heat is never off people. The temp in the house just needs to hit 64 before it comes on. Around November I raise it to 70 for mornings evenings and weekends when I'm not out.
I finally caved and turned it on. I was spending too much time under piles of blankets with my heated mattress pad up to 5. It was getting harder and harder to get up in the morning to go to work.
I wish I could say I held out longer, but too late now.
We have a house in the Hudson Valley (Ulster County). As we got it, it was uninhabitable in the winter, so it needed a lot of work for us to spend time in it. My wife has been heading the renovations. We finally just got our radiant heat going. Since the walls and floors needed replacement, installing radiant heat wasn't more expensive than other systems. Wow. I am so impressed. The places where the pipes are in the floors are warm to the touch. Not that that was a goal, but it's a nice benefit. The house is so cozy. But of course, it's slow. It's also nearly silent. The boiler is on the first floor, outside the foyer, and it's barely audible when you're nearby.
More important is that we added lots of insulation. We basically added 10 inches of rock wool to the outside of the house and put siding on the outside of that. The window frames are now very deep, and we have double- and triple-glazed windows. It's a tight envelope, as they say. It's more important to conserve the heat you make than to make heat well. This goes for comfort as well as economy.
It's funny how up here, one of the most common conversation starters is "What kind of heat do you have?" Lots of people don't have central heat. And in a sense, we don't, either, as the radiant system doesn't reach into all rooms.
I sure miss Laura on this or a similar thread each year.
Pretty sure she would/still holds the record!
