Anybody bought a mattress lately?

I really wish that they would stop making mattresses so thick and heavy.  I already have trouble lifting it when changing the sheets on my bed and I can't imagine being able to do it at all when I am "elderly" and lose strength in my wrists and hands.

From my reading and research, they're only getting heavier.

I haven't read all the recommendations, but if you are of a certain age, like to read in bed or watch TV, have a head cold, sinus issues, aching legs, etc etc, the only bed to get should be remote controlled adjustable one. Ours have twinXL foam mattresses placed in a king-size bed frame -- made up, it looks like a king size bed. Costco had a good deal last fall.

So, here's the inevitable problem with ordering from Macy's.

I placed the order and was told delivery would be Friday, Sep-8.

I got a "confirmation" email today telling me that yes, it would be delivered on Sunday, the 10th.

I called the to say I had taken the day off from work Friday to be here for the delivery and they said, "we're so sorry, the mattress will be delivered on Wednesday, the 13th, at the earliest."

Stay tuned. I fear this will not be the last we'll hear of Macy's screw-ups.

So what's an elderly person supposed to do if they can't lift their mattress to change the sheets?  I just don't believe that all this thickness is improving the comfort all that much.  We just got a not-so-think memory foam twin mattress for one of our spare rooms and it seems pretty comfortable to me.  (The cynic in me thinks that the mattress folks are in cahoots with those who sell sheets ... and, of course, the "new" sheets are much more expensive also.)

But my pillows arrived today! I was thrilled to toss out the crappy, flat and lumpy old pillows. I shall report back on their efficacy, as we say at work.

"heir efficacy"

No bed head on you.....

We bought a Serta at Mattress Firm. Pocket coils with 4.5 inches of gel foam on top. It is simply amazing.

Mr. T, Please report back asap.  Desperate need of a new mattress, but it's all too much to think about.

Pillows were fantastic.

Mattress not arriving til Wednesday. Grrr.

But I will.

This is another thing I like about our Sleep Number beds. Very, very light weight. It's mostly air, after all.

My mattress and box spring was ordered on Sunday and delivered on Tuesday with tracking available so we could pinpoint the time to within an hour.

Still happy with the pillows?

So mattress arrived Wednesday. So far, I'm loving it. The new pillows make it a whole new experience.

Mr. T, why exactly do you love it?  My husband is sleeping in another bedroom due to the sorry state of our mattress, yet I'm terrified to pull the plug.

Took my courage in my hands today and went mattress shopping. Just as much of a nightmare as I remembered from the last time, about 7 years ago. Can't compare models because different stores use different names. Salesperson stands around looking at you. And, truth be told, whether I Iie down on the mattress for 15 minutes or three hours, that really won't tell me how I would feel after a couple nights' sleep. Besides which, after you lie down on 5 or 6, they begin to feel alike. And, yes, I did read a bunch of articles, which provided so much information that my head began to swim.

So, here's my current plan. At a hotel a few months ago, I had a great night's sleep on a particular brand of mattress. I called the hotel to try to find out the specific make and model. Of course, I couldn't pinpoint the exact one in a store. In any case, I went to two stores and narrowed down the choice to 4 models, one of which may well have been the one I liked at the hotel. Now I'm pondering my options...

Interesting note: The price range of the 4 comparable models ranged from roughly $2500 to $5000! This is before haggling, though. Indeed, Consumer Reports priced the $5000 one at about $2700, so the moral of that story is caveat emptor, and be prepared to negotiate!

unicorn, my problem, exactly.  Would you mind telling me which ones you picked?  I might just follow you blindly, if you don't mind?

I have never had this problem with any piece of furniture delivered from Macys. Their white glove service has always been timely and as scheduled with nice delivery people. Is it possible there are distribution problems because of the hurricanes? Did you order on-line/by phone? If so, it's possible those are estimated times. When you order in store, they give exact date and a time window.

@krugle - I'd be happy to, but you should keep in mind that these choices vary depending on various factors, such as whether you prefer sleeping on your back, stomach or side and whether you prefer soft or firm. And then even within these parameters, there are many other aspects--foam or no foam, depth of pillowtop, and on and on. It can drive one crazy!

In any case, we've zeroed in on Simmons Beautyrest. The models we liked in Mattress Firm were "Gladney" and "Tolliver." In Sears, the models we liked were "Platinum Kimi" and "Black Calista." Mattress Firm's prices were much, much higher, but we haven't gotten to the point of haggling yet (which is something generally done for mattresses). The prices we were quoted for king-size bed ranged from $2000 to $5000.

Incidentally, Beautyrest has kind of a fun mattress selector on their website. You answer a number of questions, and it generates several models that are appropriate. I don't know how good it is, but at least it helps narrow a very, very wide field.

unicorn, thanks so much.  I'll look this up and try them.  How does one haggle for a mattress?  Seems strange.

Mr. T, what kind of pillows did you get?  I got a pair that had gotten good reviews, but they're a little too firm for me.

Hey, Okokok, I found this article, among many, many articles about pillows, and bought two of the top recommended side-sleeper pillows from Bed, Bath and beyond online. The Wamsutta Extra-Firm. They were cheap, at about $15 each and so far I'm liking them very much.

Are they solid foam?  Mine are semi firm, but I feel like they are pretty inflexible; they offer good support, but are not all that malleable.  I'm thinking if I had shredded foam I'd be able to have that cradling sensation without sacrificing the support.

Sigh. I'm re-reading this thread again. My spouse and I are having a problem agreeing on desired firmness, so we've been unable to reach a final decision. I'm now reviewing what was said about the sleep number beds, which I know nothing about.

Someone mentioned that there is a hard ridge between the two sides. If that's the case, wouldn't that make it impossible for two people ever to sleep in spoon position?

What you're calling a "hard ridge" is a piece of foam that runs the length of the bed between the two air chambers. It is noticeable, certainly, but just exactly how noticeable depends somewhat on the firmness of the chambers to either side. The only way you're going to know if it makes it "impossible" to sleep in any given position is to go try it out in one of their stores. Each of you find a firmness level you like, then meet in the middle and see how it goes.

(FWIW, it has never been an issue for my wife and I.)

@BrickPig - Thanks. I see a trip to a sleep number store in my future . . .

So, I've been sleeping on my new Beautyrest pillowtop for over a week. I have another 30 days or so to decide to keep it or not. It's worlds better than my 25 year-old Ikea POS but it may not be firm enough for me. I have absolutely been sleeping better (and the pillow helps, too, for sure). Stay tuned.

BTW, I bought it from Raymour and Flannigan and they were efficient to say the least and very prompt, polite and helpful.

What's their return policy?
