Anybody bought a mattress lately?

When you say you sleep in the bed alone, does that mean you sleep in the middle of the bed? 'Cuz that could be a potential issue for you.

In the photo that shows all the different components of the bed, see that piece of foam in between the two air chambers? That's a fairly rigid piece that keeps the space between the chambers from feeling like a hole. You don't really notice it when sleeping one or the other sides of the bed, but it would definitely feel like a ridge if you were sleeping on top of it (i.e. - in the middle of the bed).

You can definitely use your own bed frame. The SN mattress in our guest room is in a ~75 year-old bed frame. No issues.

Thank you for the info. I sleep on one side of the bed. (I'm looking for someone to sleep on the other side.)

That's great about using my own frame.

Do you think I need to go to a Sleep Number store? I think the closest store is Paramus.

I'd go to a store if I were you, yes. I think there's significant enough difference between these and conventional mattresses to warrant seeing them in person before you purchase. Of course that's just my opinion.

There is a Sleep Number store (the name of the stores is actually "Select Comfort") on Route 10 in East Hanover.

BTW: Side-sleeping (Especially on one's LEFT side) is the healthiest sleep position from a number of perspectives...

-s.

You makin' that up?

I do sleep on my left side - about 85% of this time - with a pillow held between my knees and feet. (The other 15% is when my left shoulder hurts too much and I need to roll over. I'm hoping the right new mattress might remedy that.)

Which side is better to sleep on?

Health Benefit: Sleeping on your left side can cause stress on your vital organs (liver, stomach, lungs), so if fetus is your position of choice, curl up on the right side of your body. Position: Lying on your side with both arms down by your side.

Next best: Side position. The scoop: Side-sleeping is great for overall health—it reduces snoring and keeps your spine elongated. If you suffer from acid reflux, this is the next best thing to sleeping on your back. The downside: "Sleeping on your side can cause you to get wrinkles," Dr. Glaser says.

Finding the Right Sleep Position. Is side, stomach, or back best? ... Research suggests sleeping on the left side can relieve heartburn symptoms, while right-side sleeping makes them worse. Sleeping on the left side is also recommended during pregnancy to improve circulation to the heart -- good for mom and baby.

Is it OK to sleep on your stomach?

Pros: Stomach sleeping eases snoring and some cases of sleep apnea, but that's pretty much the only good thing about going belly-down at night. Cons: Resting on the tummy is widely regarded as the worst sleeping position. It flattens the natural curve of the spine, which can lead to lower back pain.Oct 21, 2014

Wow, soda, interesting stuff, indeed.

Easy decision for me. Left side or I won't fall asleep..

Me, too. But I don't always stay asleep. And sometimes that left shoulder hurts like hell so I have to roll onto the right side. And when I do that, the headphones pop out!

Good grief, it's hard enough to sleep and now I have just learned that at least one of the 9 different positions that I sleep in may shorten my life! How am I ever supposed to fall asleep now?

Eh, the more sleep you get (to a point) the better so whatever position gets you there is good...

I just bought a mattress for our son.  I know this resource was mentioned earlier in this thread - The Mattress Underground  is a wealth of info and was really helpful in sorting out what to consider before shopping, and also what to evaluate when you are shopping.  The mattress needs to be sent to his off-campus apartment, and I purchased this one online -  Dreamfoam Arctic Dreams Mattress -  after determining that it had the required certifications, was made in USA, and was very reasonably priced.  The comments I read about it on the Mattress Underground and other sites were very positive - so hoping he will enjoy sleeping on it.  They also have a generous return policy.

Wow! Great (if perhaps too much!) info! I started reading ur to might and I'll read more tomorrow. Thanks for the link!

We bought a Flobed last year and we love it! It is latex foam with a wool and organic cotton cover. You have to assemble the bed because it has different layers of foam latex that you can customize for firmness. It's not hot and you can change out the layers of foam latex years down the road if needed.

I did a ton of research at this website. http://www.sleeplikethedead.com/bed-mattress-review-home.html They have so much useful information on any type of mattress you are looking for. They have brand and customer ratings as well as lifespan, cost, and even heat retention.

I completely dreaded buying a new mattress set, but my husband has been wanting one, so we went, with extreme trepidation, to Mattress Firm in Springfield.    In my head we would be trailed by cologne-wearing sales guys trying to sell us their highest priced stuff.   It was nothing like that and the most pleasant experience I could imagine.  The woman there guided us to various mattresses and those we liked lead her to various others at different price points.   We chose the Serta I series hybrid and some phenomenal pillows.  They arrive tomorrow, and I can't wait.  I can't recommend the place enough.

Thank you for that. I will head over there this week and hopefully, finally, pull the damn trigger.

FWIW, after following this thread, and a lot of research, I just got a Charles P.Rogers and Sons Powercore Estate 7000 queen mattress. Because of my neck and how I sleep on my side, I needed something that would keep my cervical spine aligned, requiring a degree of firmness.

At the same time I needed a mattress to provide enough plushness to cradle my shoulder, which as lingering neuropathy, due to cervical issues, and becomes really painful when I sleep on it for long periods of time. This mattress looks/feels like it will do both.

I hear that is top of the line!

our experience with Mattress Firm was more in line with what was in boomie's' head. Ick. Macys was far better, more professional, better pricing and a true money back guarantee.

How much did you pay for it, if I may ask?

And "plushness" has a strange definition in the mattress biz.

wharfrat, Have you gotten the matress yet?

I've been following this thread with interest, because I've always found mattress-buying to be one of the most difficult kinds of purchases. I find it just about impossible to judge mattress comfort by lying on a mattress in a showroom for ten minutes. In fact, the last time I bought a mattress, at Sleepy's, I decided after a few nights of use that I had made a mistake. Sleepy's did agree to exchange it, but they charged me a significant fee for doing so. I was really ticked off at myself. Now I'm at a point when I want to buy a new mattress (moving up from queen to king size), but I'm dreading the experience. Hopefully, I can use the advice in this thread to make a better decision than last time.

Sleepys= Matress Firm just FYI if you didn't know that. And, yes, they say free returns after 30 day in Home trial but there significant fees attached ( I want to say close to $500)

On sale (aren't they all), the mattress, with a cover and free delivery came to $2,000. And being King of the Cheapies I immediately had terrible buyer's remorse, even though it was a mid-priced model, until I started sleeping on it.

What I learned with this experience is that the saying "you can't put a price on comfort," applies to mattresses. A good night's sleep REALLY improves my quality of life. I did a lot of research, so much so, that when my other half saw me reading Mattress Underground, she laughed at me and called me a nutjob. After a couple days with the mattress, she's not laughing at me anymore grin

And yes, "plushness." I don't know what it is about furniture/mattress sales people and adjectives. I once bought a piece of furniture with springs and as I was trying it out before purchase the sales person kept describing the cushions as ebullient.

Conanrob there is a 120 day money back guarantee on the mattress, and the only fee is a delivery charge for pick up.  ($175)

Mattress prices then vs now kind of remind me of college tuition then vs now. My current mattress purchase price equals the combined prices I paid for all previous mattresses.

Can I get a federal loan for my mattress?

So, I finally pulled the trigger. Frankly, I was paralyzed with indecision. I had too much information, if that makes any sense. So, I took out a one-month sub to Consumer Reports online and read through their recommendations. They didn't test many of the online-only brands but they gave a very strong recommendation to the 13.5-inch Beautyrest Silver Golden Gate Pillowtop mattress for "large side-sleepers" like me. Great durability, stabilization, comfort, etc.

I shopped around for that mattress and found the (very!) best price at (ready?) Macy's. With the queen mattress, a 5" ("low profile") box spring, delivery, haul-away service, taxes, etc. for $879. Badda-bing. Done.

Consumer Reports quoted price for the mattress alone: $1,130.00

(Let's see if my sheets fit. I recently bought new sheets so I hope I don't have to replace them.)

Whew, I'm glad that's over. Delivery Friday.

Thank you to everyone who shared their insights and experience. Good sleeping to you all.

The Restful Mr T

I think mattress prices now compare rather too closely to college tuition then.  cheese

I also went looking for the best pillows for side sleepers. Found this article and bought two of the  Wamsutta Extra-Firms.

I can't wait for my new mattress and new pillows.

Great news, TSMT! Low profile box spring is what I need. I practically need a ladder to climb into bed.Minor quibble, though. My mattress is great. I feel rested when I awake. Hope you have the same results.
