Anybody bought a mattress lately?

It's not just an air mattress - mine has several inches of foam as well. We also have the adjustable base which I love.

I'm worried if I got the adjustable base, I would never get out of bed!

hmmm. People rave about it. I am still skeptical. It's an air mattress lol!

Which hotel chain has them? I think I need an overnight on one to be swayed.

I think Hilton Garden Inns have the sleep number beds.

The hotels often have the cheapest model sleep number beds, so they will not necessarily be the best way to determine if you like the bed or not. The bed we own is, I believe, pretty much what they now call the i8, except it does not have the adjustable frame. At the time of our purchase, it was the next-to-top of their line.

FWIW, we have a very high-quality air mattress for when we have more guests than we can accommodate in bedrooms. There is absolutely no comparison between the air mattress and the sleep number bed.

Nothing anyone may say here is likely to turn a skeptic into a believer, and to be sure, not everyone loves the sleep number beds. The only real way to find out what they're all about is to go to the store and try some out.

I've been to plenty of Hilton Garden Inns that didn't have them.  This sort of thing varies among individual hotels, even in many 'chains'.  My husband is an architect who mostly does hotel work and he also mentioned that many hotels shy away from sleep number beds.  Apparently there have been cases where thieves deflated and then stole the mattresses.

I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on my mattress purchase but I'm not very close to deciding what to buy or from whom. I don't want the sinking feeling of memory foam, but I'm a side sleeper and have shoulder pain from sleeping on my left shoulder night after night. I like to sleep in the cold so I need a mattress that won't get hot. My budget for a queen is about $1,000.

BTW: Anybody know whether Sleepy's rebranding into Mattress Firm has made any difference in their business practices (overall impression from prior dealings: goniffs...)?

Went to the one on Bloomfield Ave, Verona/Montclair two years ago to buy a memory foam mattress. Back last week for a replacement because the mattress is killing my recently fused neck, and there was no difference.

Am going to Charles P Rogers tomorrow.

Oddly enough, our queen brass bed (which we love) is from Chas. P. Rogers, bought back when we moved from the City. Its original mattress owed us nothing when we replaced it...

Go to Sleepy's on Route 10. Try a few without looking at the price tags. Wait till you narrow it down. Then go back on a different day and randomly try again. One will whisper your name.

I fell in love with a Beautyrest Recharge Shakespeare Collection

I just bought one of those roll mattresses for our new beach condo. Coil and foam comes rolled up and vacuum packed and "grows" to full size when you open it. It was really comfortable. Way better than the $3000 mattress I have at home. Got it for $299 or so from Wayfair.

This seems like very reasonable advice, Morganna, thanks. I'l try to do it Saturday.  I'll bring my pillows. All the sites suggest you bring pillows.

I've been reading lots of info about mattresses and mattress shopping and my problem is I just don' know what I want. Firm? Plush? Pillow top? Springs? memory foam?  Springs AND foam? Air? Gel? Adjustable?

While you're on Rt. 10 it's definitely worth it to stop in at the Sleep Number store.  I think they have options in your price range.  They will try to upsell to their most profitable model, but insist on your price range.  Side-sleeping can be an issue with their mattresses, but you can purchase a thick topper online for about $100.  This is how I solved the side-sleeping issue.  I was in the same boat you are -- no idea what to get.   I have a bad issue with lower back pain if my mattress firmness is off.  The Sleep Number solved this for me.

I'm posting Monday on the chance you didn't go shopping this weekend.

Thanks for the tips. And, no, I didn't. I'll go this coming Saturday. Wanna come along?

Oh, and by the way, I live in jersey City now so won't go to Rte. 10. All these stores have locations here.

FWIW, I'm a side sleeper, and as I have said previously, I love our Sleep Number mattress(es). Ours do have the pillow-top, so I'm sure that makes a big difference.

NOTE regarding mattress shopping: If you have several things to do on the day you're going shopping, make the mattress shopping item #1 on your agenda. Once you've tired yourself out doing chores, or even just walking around shopping for other stuff, any mattress you lie down on will feel pretty comfy.

Ha! Makes sense to me! (So I won't go after work.)

BTW: Side-sleeping (Especially on one's LEFT side) is the healthiest sleep position from a number of perspectives...

You makin' that up?

I do sleep on my left side - about 85% of this time - with a pillow held between my knees and feet. (The other 15% is when my left shoulder hurts too much and I need to roll over. I'm hoping the right new mattress might remedy that.)

are you all suggesting the mattress needs to be softer if you are a side sleeper?

I thought I had always read side sleeping was the least healthy?

good question!

asking because my mattress is medium firm but doesn't feel firm enough when I sleep on my side. It's ok when I sleep on my back

I don't know what the "correct" answer to this is, but I sleep on my left side and I keep my side of the bed pretty darned firm. "My number" is 85 (100 being the max).

Side-sleeping on the sleep number was a problem for me until I added a thick pad.  Lots of people reported that from reviews I read. I'm sure it's different for different people.

got it. In general, I always thought side sleeping required a firmer mattress that's why I asked.

I"m a side sleeper. my sleep number bed is revolutionary for me.  it makes me want to come home when on vacation in europe. and that never happens. ok maybe i'm exaggerating.  i raise my feet and head a tad to be at zero gravity, and i start to drool.

Now you make me want to buy yet another bed. Sleep is an elusive luxury. It was all that I was pursuing, but now I feel like I should be aiming higher, closer to Nirvana.

So now I'm looking at Sleep Number beds. Grrr.

Here's one that looks good and only slightly above my budget.

Starsong, is this something like what you have?

Also, I sleep alone in the bed (for the most part). Is it a waste to get this for just one sleeper?

ETA: Can I put the Sleep Number mattress on my box and frame?  I have a beautiful wrought iron bad frame that I'd like to continue to use (for sentimental as well as aesthetic reasons).  Or do I have to use their entire bed stuff?

When you say you sleep in the bed alone, does that mean you sleep in the middle of the bed? 'Cuz that could be a potential issue for you.

In the photo that shows all the different components of the bed, see that piece of foam in between the two air chambers? That's a fairly rigid piece that keeps the space between the chambers from feeling like a hole. You don't really notice it when sleeping one or the other sides of the bed, but it would definitely feel like a ridge if you were sleeping on top of it (i.e. - in the middle of the bed).

You can definitely use your own bed frame. The SN mattress in our guest room is in a ~75 year-old bed frame. No issues.
