Winter Weather Advisory Monday 2/22 for 2" - 4" of !@#$%&* Snow

yes, it be snowing.

fleh

gonna have to wear my yaktrax

Thurs 2/18 Snow Update

Light snow is starting to overspread the area. Because the air is so dry, it could take some time for the snow to reach the ground, but by midmorning should be snowing steadily. Models have mostly backed off the signal for a heavy snowfall ("front-end thump") this morning. Instead expect light to moderate but steady snow through the daylight hours. There is a chance some sleet will mix in this afternoon. Both these factors likely to lower total snowfall so now looking at 4" - 6" likely accumulation by the time this is done Friday morning.

Snowfall likely to continue lightly through the night and we'll into Friday morning. No significant wind expected. Because of the lower totals, NWS has lowered alert level to Winter Storm Advisory from a Watch.

and so much for "[the snow] may take some time to reach the ground"

Its gonna snow for theoretically 24 hours and only 4-6 inch total? That's not a bad outcome at all..

That’s a sign that it will be a very bad situation on the roads. Too little to plow and no salt on the roads. Rain and sleet on top of a bed of snow is not fun.

Within a half hour of the snow starting, our sidewalks were covered and it was already slippery for dog walking. Maybe because it is so cold? I was surprised and yes, to yaktrax.

I have nowhere to be until Sunday,  I was strictly thinking about how much shoveling I'll have to do. Havent seen any salt trucks yet now that you mention it.

Back in the early 90’s we would always know where the border with union was, no salt no plowing on union streets. Maplewood was always the first to take care of the streets during snow storms. Not dunking on union, but it was a deciding factor when I was looking for a home. Times keep on changing.
south orange avenue and Springfield avenue were always more dicey.

I did a quick grocery run EARLY this morning, and Maplewood streets were treated; no treatment when I crossed into South Orange.

How is sleet happening????  How how how?

Sleet should not be happening now.  I give up.  I know nothing.

Well... you did say after noon. Just a few minutes early. It’s a mess. Looks like the snow will pick up again intensely later today.
I am tired of winter now.

I've been seeing SO DPW trucks plowing all morning.

I am supposed to get second vaccine shot tomorrow at Noon at Livingston.

Hope that will not be a problem.

Today's vaccine appointments were rescheduled.  Tomorrow's will depend on road conditions and vaccine delivery capability.  Definitely sleeting out there.  I just got in from doing a one shovel width pass.  Snow is getting much harder to move than it was this morning.  Also saw a plow for the first time today.  Road in front of my house is still very icy.

I've seen teams coming through since my last post. Late start but the plows and salters are making rounds now.

Just saw the plow again while I was making another pass.

2:00 P.M.  I just finished with battery snow blower on the driveway and walk.  Still light snow. Easy.

I will do another pass around 6:00 and hope it is as easy.

Almost entirely sleet in Midtown Manhattan. Had some car-sized aggregate flakes earlier though.

i think your good for tomorrow ( not a weather person)

Is that it?

No. More sleet and snow expected tonight.

Back in from a second shoveling stint. We're expecting more over night? Anyone know how much?

1 -3 inches from this evening until late tomorrow afternoon is the forecast for the region.  I don't know about Maplewood specifically.

I reject our current reality and substitute my own.

I'm saying it's uncomfortable and not catatrophic.  Go to bed with your honey, your pup, your kids, stay warm.  And good luck with the snow.  Take good care of yourselves.  We are watching, and we are concerned about you all up north.

==== looks like sleet, followed by snow, ending around 9 am.

Yikes. I just put the recycling and garbage out at the street at 10 p.m. There is a definite layer of ice, especially where the snow has been sorta cleared off a sidewalk or driveway. Lots of penguin walking back into Fallen Oaks Manor.
