...MAJOR OUTBREAK OF COLD AIR THIS WEEKEND...

BITTERLY COLD TEMPERATURES WILL MOVE INTO THE AREA THIS WEEKEND.

* TEMPERATURES SATURDAY NIGHT INTO EARLY SUNDAY MORNING WILL FALL
CLOSE TO ZERO IN AND AROUND NEW YORK CITY...AND ZERO TO 5 BELOW
ACROSS LONG ISLAND...INTERIOR NORTHEAST NEW JERSEY...THE LOWER
HUDSON VALLEY...AND SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT. WIND CHILL VALUES
DURING THIS TIME COULD REACH LIFE THREATENING LEVELS AS COLD AS
20 TO 25 BELOW ZERO.

* HIGH TEMPERATURES ON SUNDAY WILL ONLY BE IN THE TEENS.

* COLD SPELLS OF THIS MAGNITUDE BRING A RISK OF FROSTBITE AND
HYPOTHERMIA FOR ANYONE WHO DOES NOT TAKE PROPER PRECAUTIONS. IN
ADDITION...FROZEN PIPES AND OVERWORKED FURNACES COULD LEAVE YOUR
HOUSE WITHOUT HEAT OR RUNNING WATER...AND CAR BATTERIES RUN THE
RISK OF DYING.

* NEVER VENTURE OUTDOORS WITHOUT WEARING GLOVES...A HAT AND
SEVERAL LAYERS OF CLOTHING. WIND CHILL VALUES LATE SATURDAY
NIGHT INTO SUNDAY MORNING COULD LEAD TO FROSTBITE IN LESS THAN
30 MINUTES IF PROPER PRECAUTIONS ARE NOT TAKEN.

* RUN WATER AT A TRICKLE AND KEEP CABINET DOORS OPEN TO PREVENT
PIPES FROM FREEZING.

* NEVER USE A STOVE OR OVEN TO HEAT YOUR HOME OR USE AN OPEN FLAME
TO MELT FROZEN PIPES. MANY HOUSE FIRES RESULT FROM THESE
PRACTICES.

* CHECK TIRE PRESSURE AND YOUR CAR BATTERY. BE SURE YOUR CAR HAS
A WINTER SAFETY KIT THAT INCLUDES A BLANKET...WARM CLOTHES AND
GLOVES IN CASE YOUR CAR BREAKS DOWN OR BECOMES STRANDED.

* TAKE EXTRA STEPS TO KEEP YOUR PETS WARM AND KNOW THEIR LIMITS TO
COLD.

Thank you for all those reminders - very helpful!

I'm not a girly man. I can take it.

I don't need a compass to know which way the wind shines.

Really? Y'all own more space heaters than the reptile house at the zoo.

Gonna break out the down coat. Only get to wear it 3-4 times a year it's so warm. Not my best purchase...

Except on those 3-4 days.  I have a down parka like this.  I figure its an investment that will pay off over the course of a lifetime (assuming I don't put on 50 lbs).

You are so right. I was warmer today than I was yesterday because I wore it, and I was dressed pretty warmly yesterday. I may have been too warm today...

I now own what I think of as my polar-vortex-dog-walking-coat.  Heaviest and longest down coat Land's End sells. Kind of ugly, but bought on heavy discount, and my daughter and I both use it for those cold dog walks.

I have a down coat from Land's End but I have to say, it doesn't feel warm enough some days. I wonder if I need to exchange it for a different type (though it's been a few years - don't they have that guarantee?).

I have had the same type of Lands End coat for several years.  I dislike it and think about getting rid of it every year.  But then..........no.  It's the best thing ever for dog-walking.

Mine is an Anne Klein I got from Lord and Taylor a few years ago. Long, hooded, fitted, two-way front zip, sides zip up for walking/cooling. It's not the most hideous thing I've ever seen...

eta: Almost everytime I wear it, I think, "nope, not cold enough... "

I have massive Michelin-man North Face long coat. I bought it for football games, but it was too hot. Working great now.

Mine is an angle length, hooded down coat from L. L. Bean.  It was perfect for today.

Lol!

Temps will continue to FALL throughout today and tonight.  Yes, that's right, you have already experienced today's balmy high of 22!

By sunset, temps will be in the single digits, and easily could be below zero by morning.

Winds will be picking up over the next few hours, with steady 20 - 30 MPH and gusts into the 40s.

Windchill overnight as low as -20 or more.

Tomorrow's high in the low teens, winds abating, but don't expect the windchill to hit positive numbers before Monday as temps rise to seasonal levels.

Currently expecting Tuesday precipitation to be rain, but things could change.

thank you again max.

I went out earlier to tie down a tarp I had covering some deck furniture and this happened.

So I guess the who can turn on the heat in their house last contest is over?

Ah, yes. The thing I hate about February. Well, I also have one of those extremely serious long down coats from Eddie Bauer, so I will bundle up in that on the couch and wait for spring. While hoping my car battery holds out.
