Gen Wealth is not located above the Tratoria.  They are located in their own building.

My wording on that was ambiguous.  The only thing above The Tratoria is their roof.  By above I meant up the block...........facing Tratoria Gen Wealth is one or two buildings to the right

Happy Thanksgiving!

OMGoodness, I had no idea there was so much going on! for our seniors. I hope that those who would benefit know what's available. I wonder how it's possible to reach out to all who would?

Communication is a serious problem.  Email blasts sent on request to those who subscribe are the easiest way of letting seniors (and everyone else) know what is going on in our community.  Unfortunately, seniors especially may not have email access or may not use it frequently if they do have it.  Hard copy information in the form of newsletters and flyers are available by mail on request and at central locations frequented by seniors.  Still, in a recent survey (still available on SOMA Two Towns For All Ages website through 11/20/2019) Maplewood and South Orange residents age 50+ who responded thus far indicated that word of mouth was their major means of learning about events, programs, and services of special interest to seniors.  Conclusion is that you have to be aware of what is going on to know what is going on.

How do you reach those who are not already connected in some fashion?  At present, seniors can subscribe to a variety of available email blasts through Maplewood's (or South Orange's) website and through the SOMA Two Towns For All Ages website, and can request hard copy newsletter be mailed to you through the SOMA Two Towns For All Ages website and through the Maplewood Department of Recreation (call 973-763-0750 and ask for Michelle).  These are two different newsletters. If they don't want to subscribe to an information source, they can pick up copies of flyers advertising individual programs at the Senior Center, DeHart Center, local libraries, and other locations frequented by seniors.  If anyone reading this has questions or suggestions on the topic of communication of offerings of interest to local seniors, or anything else regarding events, programs, and services impacting Maplewood seniors, please post them here so we can continue the dialog.

Is O.L.S. basement (Thanksgiving dinner) wheelchair accessible?

I don't know.  Since this event requires advance registration, I would suggest calling the phone number below and asking there.  Also, verify that space is still available.

All seniors are invited but RSVP quickly because space is limited. RSVP to Mame at 513-314-7845.

Seniors need to keep watch and mobilize if it becomes serious:

WASHINGTON — President Trump suggested on Wednesday that he would be willing to consider cuts to social safety-net programs like Medicare to reduce the federal deficit if he wins a second term, an apparent shift from his 2016 campaign promise to protect funding for such entitlements.

The president made the comments on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Despite promises to reduce the federal budget deficit, it has ballooned under Mr. Trump’s watch as a result of sweeping tax cuts and additional government spending.

Asked in an interview with CNBC if cuts to entitlements would ever be on his plate, Mr. Trump answered yes.

“At some point they will be,” Mr. Trump said, before pointing to United States economic growth. “At the right time, we will take a look at that.”

Mr. Trump suggested that curbing spending on Medicare, the government health care program for the elderly, was a possibility.

“We’re going to look,” he said.

The interview left many questions unanswered, including whether Mr. Trump would consider touching Social Security or what part of Medicare he would be willing to shave.

Presenting the ACE+ Guide for Life Long Learning
Retirement, semi retirement or becoming an empty nester usually
comes with one major benefit - time to do things you never had time
to do before. There is no shortage of things to do, but finding out
about them can be a challenge. Where can you find information on
what is available? Introducing the ACE+ Guide!
Featuring information about local museums, art classes, lecture
series and auditing classes at local universities, the ACE+ Guide
(Arts, Culture, Education +more) consolidates many options into one
handy guide. Audit a class at Seton Hall or Montclair State; go to
one of the Newark History Society’s presentations; find a local art
class or go to a local museum - try something new! The ACE+ Guide
will be available as of March 2 at the Maplewood Senior Center and
the town hall offices in both South Orange and Maplewood. To have
a copy mailed to you, email SOMA2towns@gmail.com or call (973)
558-0863. And if you are interested in volunteer opportunities, come

Woodland.

Home Repairs - How to Hire a Professional

Based on “Here to Stay: Home Upkeep for All™” by AARP Foundation

& The Hartford Company

Home maintenance and repair are part of the continuous pleasures (and

pains) of owning a home. While many people are used to doing the work

themselves, there comes a time when you might consider hiring someone

to do the work instead. If you haven’t used a contractor before or don’t

have a regular, trusted repair person, finding help can be intimidating.

You need to know who to trust for quality work, at a fair price in a

timely manner. So how do you start to look?

1. Make a list of what you need done. Be clear and comprehensive in

what you want, what you see as a problem. See which can be addressed

by the same repair person, like the leaky kitchen sink and the installing a

hand held shower head. You will save time and money by organizing

your needs by who can fix them.

2. Get recommendations from family and friends. Ask people that

have had similar work done. If you see a contractor’s sign on a

neighbor’s lawn, ask them how the project went and if they are pleased

with the results. Do NOT trust professionals that come to your door

uninvited. (Visit AARP’s Fraud Watch Network for more about protecting yourself from scammers.)

3. Check recommendations. Check the Better Business Bureau for

complaints against the contractor or company. You can look at online

reviews, but be aware that they tend to be posted by the extremely happy

or the extremely upset.

4. Ask for proof of credentials and insurance. Never hire someone

without checking that they have proper certifications, licensing, bonding

and insurance.

5. Ask for estimates. Estimates should detail materials, labor

charges, start and end dates, and total cost. Make sure it is a formal

estimate - it should be printed on company letter head. Also get an

estimate of how long will it take to complete the work for larger

projects.

6. Get everything in writing. Don’t approve plans you don’t

understand. Never sign a contract with blanks, and keep a copy of

everything you sign.

7. Don’t pay the final bill until all work is completed. You may be

asked to pay for materials and/or a deposit in the beginning of the

project, but until all work is completed (and passes inspection, if

necessary) you are not obligated nor should you be expected to pay the

balance.

8. Get permits if necessary. Sometimes people offer to skip permits

to save you money, but with a permit comes the inspection by the town’s

building department and approval that it has been done safely. If in

doubt as to whether you need a permit, call the building department.

From the Cognitive and Research Center of NJ:

3 Books and A Movie
About aging and what it means to really live, even in the face of adversity.

We will be discussing the following books on the dates indicated and ending our program by watching a film together. All welcome!
March 3rd Being Mortal by Atul Gawande (nonfiction)
The CRCNJ, 195 Mountain Avenue, Springfield
3:00 -4:00 pm
Dr. Gawande, a practicing surgeon, has fearlessly
revealed the struggles of his profession. In this book, he
examines limitations and failures-in the medical profession as life
draws to a close. Riveting, honest, and humane, Being
Mortal
shows how the ultimate goal is not a good death but a
good life-all the way to the very end.

May 12th The Last Lecture: Lessons in Living by Randy Pausch
(memoir)
The CRCNJ, 195 Mountain Avenue, Springfield
3:00 -4:00 pm
Randy Pausch, a Carnegie Mellon University professor, was
asked to give a lecture on “What wisdom would he impart on the
world if he knew this was his last chance?” Unknown to him
when he accepted the challenge, he had recently been
diagnosed with terminal cancer. Pausch’s lecture wasn’t about
dying at all but about “Achieving Your Dreams.” It was about the
importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of
others, of seizing every moment. It was a summation of
everything Randy had come to believe. It was about living.

August 3th A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman (fiction)
The CRCNJ, 195 Mountain Avenue, Springfield
3:00 -4:00 pm
A grumpy, yet lovable man’s world is turned upside down when a
chatty young couple and their two daughters moved next door
and unexpectedly flatten his mailbox. This leads to a
heartwarming and funny tale highlighting an unexpected
friendship. This book emphasizes the impact one’s life can
have on others.

Dec. 8th Movie: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
(Based on These Foolish Things, by Deborah Moggach)
The CRCNJ, 195 Mountain Avenue, Springfield
2:00 -5:00 pm
Located in Jaipur, India, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel has a
great brochure, which portrays it in glowing terms, and attracts
the attention of seven aging British people. When the new
residents arrive, they realize that the brochure was more of a
dream of the young Manager than reality. This is a heartwarming
and funny movie that starts in chaos, but everyone finds out what
they really want at the end.

Reservations are required as space is limited.
Participants should be committed to attending all four events.
To reserve your spot, contact us at thecrcnj.com or call 973 850 4622. This program is cost-free to participants thanks to the generous donations of a supportive CRCNJ Family.
