Years of the Maplewood NJ Senior (Older Adult)

Thank you to everyone who turned out for the Meet the Seniors Advisory Committee session at the Maplewood Library this morning.  There was lots of really good discussion.  While we would like to give everyone a substantial discount on real property taxes, this substantially is beyond our pay grade. LOL  That said, there a number of things that we can get done that will help seniors age in place for as long as possible.  If you were unable to attend the session and have ideas that you would like to see us address, please post them here or in a PM to me and I will pass the suggestions/concerns/needs onto the rest of the committee.  Following two posts deal with programs offered by the Maplewood Fire Department that I learned about at this morning's meeting.

Maplewood Fire Department offers free in-home fire safety inspections for Maplewood residents. Fire fighters will come to your home to help identify fire hazards and suggest ways in which to make the home safer.  Inspections generally take about an hour and cover such things as correct placement and testing of smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms, fire escape planning, proper removal of fire hazards, and proper types and placement of fire extinguishers.  To schedule an appointment, call 973-762-6500 ext. 10.  This service is not limited to our senior population.

The Maplewood Fire Department is continuing a program to distribute smoke detectors free of charge to senior citizens and needy families that reside in one or two family homes in Maplewood.  Referrals from the Maplewood Welfare Department and the Maplewood Health Department will receive priority. On-duty firefighters will install the smoke detectors in the proper locations and instruct residents on proper use and maintenance.  Residents receiving these smoke detectors must sign a waiver indicating that they will maintain the detectors in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.  Assistance is available for the proper placement and installation of carbon monoxide detectors.  However, the homeowner must supply the carbon monoxide detectors.  Residents taking advantage of this assistance must sign a waiver indicating that they will maintain the detectors in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.  To schedule an appointment to have a smoke detector installed, call 973-762-6500 ext. 10 between the hours of 9 am and 4 pm.

Intro to Mahjong January 7th and January 14th 2019 at Maplewood Senior Center, 1 pm.  Free but space is limited.  Call 973-763-0750 to register.

I just learned about a writing contest sponsored by Essex County.  This year's topic is to write a story of up to 1,500 words focusing on a special person, a life-altering experience, or a significant period of your life.  To be eligible for the contest, you must be 60 years of age or older and reside in Essex County.  Entries are due no later than Friday March 15, 2019.  I have requested additional information which I will post to this thread as soon as it is received.  If you want to contact the County directly regarding this contest, you can call 973-395-8389.  I just checked the County's website and no information on the contest is yet posted there.

Here is the complete press release:

ESSEX COUNTY EXECUTIVE DIVINCENZO INVITES

ESSEX SENIOR CITIZENS TO SHARE ANECDOTES AND LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCES IN ANNUAL LEGACIES WRITING CONTEST

Authors are Encouraged to Begin Writing Now;

Deadline for Entries is Friday, March 15, 2019

Essex County, NJ – Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. and the Essex County Division of Senior Services invite Essex seniors ages 60 and older to submit an original story focusing on a special person, life-changing experience or significant period of their life to the 2019 Essex County Legacies Writing Contest. The deadline is Friday, March 15, 2019.

“Our senior citizens have led interesting lives and I am always impressed by the stories that are submitted. Our Legacies Contest is an opportunity for our older residents to remember their past and share their experiences with family, friends and the younger generation,” DiVincenzo said. “It’s never too early to begin collecting your thoughts and writing your drafts. I encourage all our seniors to start working on their entries now,” he added.

The contest rules are as follows:

  • Writers must be Essex County residents who are 60 years of age or older.
  • Entries should be original stories focusing on a special person, a life-altering experience or a significant period in your life.
  • The suggested maximum length is 1,500 words.
  • Stories must be typed or legibly hand-written on 8.5-by-11-inch paper.
  • Entries must have a cover page with the story’s title, the author’s name, date of birth, address and telephone number.
  • The story title with no identifying information should appear on the first page of the story text. All identifying information about the author is removed when stories are judged by the review committee.
  • Seniors may submit only one entry.
  • Previously published stories may not be submitted.
  • Seniors should keep a copy of the story. Entries will not be returned.
  • The deadline for entries is Friday, March 15, 2019. Late entries will not be accepted.

Essex County Division of Senior Services

Attn: Gloria Chambers-Benoit

900 Bloomfield Avenue

Verona, NJ 07044

Or e-mailed to gbenoit@seniors.essexcountynj.org

All writers who submit stories will be invited to the Division of Senior Services Legacies Award Ceremony in May 2019. Awards will be presented to the authors of the winning and honorable mention stories. These stories will be posted on the Essex County website at www.essexcountynj.org.

For a complete list of contest rules or for more information, please visit www.essexcountynj.org or call the Essex County Division of Senior Services at 973-395-8389.

The Division of Senior Services offers a wide range of services to eligible Essex County senior citizens. It offers adult protective services, provides transportation, administers adult day care, offers counseling for caregivers, provides home delivered meals and offers visiting nurse services. For more information about these and other services, please call the Division at 973-395-8375. Individuals with hearing impairments may reach the Division by calling the New Jersey Relay Service (711V/TYY).

For those interested in entering the above contest, there will be a program at Hilton Branch Library on Thursday January 10, 2019 at 1 pm entitled Write Your Memoir Five Minutes at a Time.  Since entrants are essentially being asked to write a mini-memoir, this program should be especially helpful in getting entrants started and helping with ideas and polishing.  Those interested in putting their memories in print, even if they are not interested in entering the contest should find this program helpful and are urged to attend.

Attention Maplewood Senior Club members:

An officer from the MPD will be speaking about the Blue Angel Program at the Senior Club meeting on January 9th .  Blue Angel is an initiative under which seniors living alone or with serious medical conditions who find themselves alone in the house for extended periods of time can apply to have a lockbox placed on the exterior of their home.  The lockbox will only be accessible to first responders who may need to access your home in the event of a 911 call to your home or for a wellness check.

Not a Senior Club member?  Want to join?  Dues for 2019 will be collected at the January meeting.  Meeting will be held at the Maplewood Senior Center at 106 Burnet Avenue.  For more information about the Senior Club, contact the Maplewood Department of Recreation.

Operation Blue Angel is now live.  If you are a senior who lives in Maplewood and who either lives alone or has a debilitating medical condition and frequently finds himself/herself frequently alone in the house, you may want to consider calling the non-emergency number for the MPD (973-762-3400 x 7913 to schedule an appointment to have a lockbox installed on the exterior of your house.  This box will contain a key to your house, which you supply.  Only the police department will have the code required to access the key.  Code will only be used in the event of emergency when first responders need to gain access to your home and you are physically incapable of opening the door to let them in.  In the event of an incident such as a fall or fire, this can be lifesaving.  For additional information, check out the cover story on the February - March 2019 edition of the Olde News. Please consider applying.

Please join the Maplewood Seniors Advisory Committee on Saturday February 9, 2019 at the Maplewood Senior Center, 106 Burnett Avenue from 10 am to noon.  Tell us ways in which we can work to improve life for seniors in Maplewood as our seniors try to age in place for as long as possible.  All are welcome: seniors, children of seniors, soon to be seniors, and any others who are interested in being part of the solution.  Want to help with our initiatives?  We will gladly speak with you about volunteer opportunities. Hope to see many of you there.
