Who remembers this old bar on South Orange Ave.? archived

Okay, there used to be a bar/restaurant on South Orange Ave., just after Sacred Heart Church that we would go to after the bars were closed in M/SO...in my much wilder days. Driving me nuts that I can't remember the name of this place! It was very popular, with the college crowd, and the reason we went was because it was open until 4:00 am. In the late 80's mid 90's and it was always packed at 2:00 am or so when we got there.
There must be a reason I can't remember the name, :wink: and BTW, anyone remember Kevin's? OMG, so glad I grew up!

Paulie's or The Hall?

Baileymac...yes, my spouse said it was originally Paul's Tavern, also known as Paulie's. But we could not remember the "newer" name. And yes, thanks for jogging my memory!!! When I first went there it was The Hall.

OMG... I only went there once or twice after the Stuft Shirt, Forty Love or the Rusty Scupper's last call; since I wasn't the designated driver (we didn't even call it that in the early '80s) I could never find it again on my own. Somebody told me it was Cryan's original place, but I knew that couldn't be right.

...and spouse remembers Kevin's on Mt. Vernon where you could get a beer-soaked hot dog.

Paulie's and The Hall were two different bars. The Hall was about a block closer to South Orange. I could not get into The Hall because they actually asked for ID. They didn't care if it was fake or not, but you still needed to produce one. Paulies only asked for ID on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, so other than those nights I was able to get in.

my mom used to tell about going to Paulie's way back. she married a SH graduate (my dad) class of 1941 I think. my dad grew up on Marion ave. . .

OH man...what memories...40 love-first drink White russian (hey it was the late 70's...don't make fun!)...rusty scupper...how about ground round on Northfield. Drank way too many beers there!

Yeah, Shananigans with Henry and (can never remember the other guy). Henry looked like Frank Zappa on steroids and they were Montclair State guys I think. Before Shenanigans, there was Paul's, Corcorans (across the street) and a German place (same block as Paul's) called Hahne's or something like that which served Weis Bier with syrup and lemon. Down Sanford almost all the way to Springfield Ave was Cryans which was a rock club.

40 Love, Ground Round, Rusty Scupper (this was a beautiful place on the north end of the Essex Green Shopping Center. Then there was Creations on Eagle Rock Ave. And of course, Dodd's in Orange. here was another place with a big airplane hanging from the ceiling called Lilly Marlene's...anyone remember it? There was also a big bar at he intersection of Northfield Ave and Cherry Lane where the Atkins Medical Building is now.

In Orange, there was the Village Tap Room (owned by the family of a SHU Frat Bro) which later became Saints and Sinners (I was on the softball team).

Some may say this is testment to a mis-spent youth...I beg to differ!!

I remember being in all three of those bars, but couldn't begin to tell you which one was which. Oh my. can someone please stop the recurring flashbacks this thread has brought on..........

In Orange, up the street from the Jailhouse Pub, currently Hat City Kitchen, was Salandreys (sp) for the thick roast beef sandwiches on rye.

One thing is clear: this area seems to lack drinking establishments when compared with the past. Where did all the licences go?

the licenses might be there...but those bars on SO Avenue were in the Vailsburg section of Newark. Maybe I'm getting old, but I don't see me going down there to drink anymore. Also, during the period I'm talking about, virtually every kid at the university was legal. The bars were packed.

Shananigans and Henry were a great time when the SO bars closed. There are so many others but I do recall a place called Bottom of the Barrel. An older crowd there but after 2 we would stop in for last call.

where was the Bottom of the Barrel?

I think on Sanford Ave you make a right past Sacred Heart Church.

Wow, such memories. The bar that is now the Atkins Med building was Doc Callahan's. Best happy hour food, you name it, they had it. Now a real oldie question, what was the name of the bar that before it became the Stufted Shirt? Sold package goods, had a pool table, too.

dont forget Geltzilers(sp) and The Pilots lounge. also the after club run by the Campisi's.

I can't help you there. When I got there is 1972/1973 it was already the SS I think. We did favor Regan's Liquor Store on SO Ave for all of our beer keg needs in those days.

Before that...23 Valley...same place as Toro Loco.

Not the Longhorn. I graduated CHS in '72 and it changed sometime when I was in high school.

Longhorn was 23 Valley and is now Toro Loco.

Also, great times at Tierney's in Montclair and Joint in the Woods in Wayne.

Anyone remember Wallace's in Orange, across from Star Pizzaria? It had a liquor store front and a bart in the back with great live jazz bands?

I thought this was a local interest thread. How about Emerson's for Grogs?

Glover- Wasn't the Stuft Shirt always the Stuft Shirt? I have vague memories of it being built.
Doc Callahans was originally a supper theater (?) I think at that time it was called the Westwood. I believe it was empty for a while prior to Doc's something about a death in the lower level.

there was trouble downstairs, continually, the place was called Daisys. I saw Pat Benatar there, before she became famous!!!
