Which End Of NJTransit Closer To LIRR?

So taking my first big excursion since rupturing my Achilles tendon in February. Going to take NJT to Penn and then catch the LIRR. Want to minimize walking and steps.

1. When boarding in So Orange which end of the train shall I head for? Which will be closer to the concourse to LIRR?

2. Is there an elevator from the platform in Penn to the ground level?

A little nervous but it's gotta be done.

Thanks

NCJ

The main status board for LIRR would be toward the front, but the trains use tracks that are parallel to the NJT tracks, so it really doesn't matter, as there are auxillary status boards elsewhere.

There are elevators from Track level to Concourse level, and elevators from Concourse to Street, but none that go all the way.

It can vary depending on what track you end up in, what track you want to go to, etc. But the front of the train would likely be better than the back.  There are elevators in various places. You may find yourself walking past a staircase to get one though.

Try calling NJT Customer Service and ask them.  If you tell them what train you will be taking to NYP, they may even be able to tell you the track your train would most likely be arriving on.

I would suggest slightly behind the middle of the train.  There are no stairs between the platforms on the mezzanine level for NJT and LIRR on the 8th Avenue side whereas on the 7th Avenue side, there are steps between the stairs for 9-10 platform and the 11-12 platform.

have to get a ticket so I can't go directly to the LIRR track  thanks for the suggestions

if you have a handicapped card ( because of your injury), you can go right to the train and not pay the $5 fee. Same applies if you are a senior ( not that that applies to you yet!)

Thanks. I was on the phone with LIRR when you posted that and that was what she said. I have my handicapped permit and I will carry that. Hubby has his license with a very old date on it. Hahaha

You can buy a LIRR ticket on the lower level of Penn, from vending machines in the corridor reached most easily from the back of an NJT train. Exit the NJT train and take the elevator, escalator or stairs up just one flight (not to the main level) and walk past the gates in ascending order. You will soon come to LIRR vending machines (and a wine store, if you need one). And you will be surrounded by LIRR gates, without having to endure the scrum at the ticket counter. No need at all to go to the main concourse or to street level, and fewer stairs to navigate.

@j_r  your directions were absolutely perfect  Made the LIRR train with 2 Minutes to spare  Never would have done it without your instructions. and only one flight of stairs to climb. Amazing. Thank you so much

So glad you made it! Now you're ready for some Mets games and the U.S. Open.

Somehow I think the walk from the train exit to either of these venues would be a bit too much for me currently but there is always next year.

Wonder if there is an APP or at least a map that has all the myriad tunnels and connections available. It's like a buried city under there waiting to be explored.

Here's a map but I don't know that it will be much help:
