What's your favorite BM neutral for a sunny bedroom? archived

Trying to pick a color for our master bedroom. It has a large window and gets good natural light most of the day. The color doesn't have to be off white (please no) or beige (but can be) but needs to be kinda neutral-ish. What would you suggest?
I usually have a neutral BM after I eat oatmeal or soup

...but funny.

If you go with a warm grey, you can accessorize with just about any color and it looks great.

If you are painting the room yourself, you can get little samples and paint each on the wall. It's best to do this so you see how the color changes with the time of day.

When I painted my dinning room, I chose a light blue (several actually), and the one I finally finished the room with was the one I liked best during the evening hours. It was a little softer than my other choices, and looked best day, or night.

If you're going to hire a painter--Robert was a great choice for me. He advertises on MOL. He has a wealth of swatches, and expert advice.

Best of luck making your bedroom everything it can be.

Can't remember the color's name but we used a nice light taupe neutral from Ben-Moore back in MA. We had it mixed at 75% since the room was small and the color would be on all 4 walls. Depending on the morning light it would remind us a nice cup of coffee with cream.

my favs from BM...and they all have nothing in common are :
Lighthouse landing (stony yellow tone)
Light Platinum (soft grayish)
Misty Air (its different in every light)

Also, check out Shh's blog. She has a great eye for color, IMO.

sorry - couldn't stop laughing at the thought, so had to post it...

In all seriousness, we just had our downstairs painted using BM Regal paint, and used "Antique parchment" in the living room, which really looks great with all of our white molding...

we didn't use BM paint (makes me snicker too) but have our bedroom painted a slate-y grey.
i really like it because it looks beautiful with both the white-painted woodwork, and the natural oak doors in the room.
it also changes colour depending upon the light. it can be a true charcoal-y slate, but sometimes tends more toward a blue or a purple.
it's also easy to change the other colour elements in the room, and still have it look good. i've done brown, i've done black & white, i've done blues....

My bedroom color is called Latte I think and I LOVE IT. LOVE. It matches everything. I accessorized with navy blue and some deep jewel tones. Its just so soothing but not bland at all.

Yeah, the BM thing gets me every time too.

When we renovated our house, I painted most of my first floor Ballet White. I know, not what you're looking for. But I've really found it to be a perfect neutral. It's not too yellowish or too bluish or too pinkish or any other form of "ish." And the quality of the color changes with the changes in the light. And it's just "off" enough to make my bright white trim pop. And it accessorizes well with lots of colors.

Can you tell Ballet White is my new favorite? And, FWIW, I am usually very ANTI-WHITE! And I mean that in terms of paint/home decor color choices, lest "anyone" accuse me of being racist or bigoted!

Cool! Actually, warm!

Sometimes even HOT! tee hee

Someone on another thread was using BM Dijon in their living and dining room, and I thought it was so pretty I'm considering for somewhere in our house.

I do painting jobs on the side, and when potential clients ask about neutrals I usually bring out this list to consider, with some bias towards soft greens and grays rather than the standard beiges. Grant Beige and Raccoon Hollow are kind of dark for a traditional neutral, but could work well in a natural light-saturated space. Precise answer probably isn't below, but looking at them might help you define and narrow your interests. Enjoy!

Silken Pine 2144-50
Coastal Fog AC-1
Grant Beige HC-83
Powell Buff HC-35
Soft Fern 2144-40
Raccoon Hollow 978
Sage Tint 458

Robert167, what if you have a space that's facing north and is therefore NOT sunny? What kinds of neutrals would work there without making it feel dark?

In my very sunny (all windows) library we used Senora Gray. Just a bit deeper than Coastal Fog, which was my other choice.

Of course, first I would want to know what type of flooring you have, whether or not the trim will be painted, what color your furniture is and if you like bedding to be white/solid/patterned/colored.

Right now, I LOVE my sunny (South and West facing windows) master bedroom done in Chelsea Gray with bone white trim. I did the ceiling in Gray Horse for a little contrast because the mouldings are very thick. It never seems dark even though the colors are dark, and we stained the floor pretty dark (though we have a large seagrass rug). My furniture is a medium dark cherry, but my bed is upholstered the same color as the trim.

whisper to LAS -- she has a great set of colors --

And I agree with Robert about preferring grays and greens to beiges as far as neutrals go. I do like golds, but in smaller doses.

PeggyC, many options ... I'd start with above list which introduce subtle grays and greens, maybe deleting Grant Beige and Raccoon Hollow. For more traditional neutral (off-white towards beige) perhaps consider options like Hepplewhite Ivory (BM HC-36) in butterscotch family ... or Powder Sand 2151-70, which is a true neutral off-white ... an ivory like Elephant Tusk OC-8. Ballet White as suggested is an option, as are the many off-whites. Sherwin Williams has a nice yellow ivory, Ivoire 6127.

Have seen Dijon, it is very lovely and warm, not overly dark but firmly in the yellow/gold family and not technically a neutral. Just some ideas ... agree with shh, many things to consider such as trim, wood, furnishings etc.

I've seen many choose a color then notice it is similar color to their dog or cat ... not always a coincidence!

Oh, if you DO want more of a beige, Carrington Beige is lighter than Grant Beige and is a true neutral. It looks great with white trim (even soft white).

chelsea gray is my office accent color! plus a lighter shade, forgot the name.

I like our living room, entry way and downstairs bathroom colors, but I can't remember their names any more. I went through 4 tries in the living room.

PeggyC, Dijon was peteglider's thread, who was just here picking up something.
And HE complimented me on our LR/entry!

I have Carrington Beige in my Hallways and master bedroom with white trim and ceiling. I love the color.

I am looking for a white with a hint of caramel for a small powder room. Any suggestions?

This is really funny, because I've noticed in the past that all our furniture and paint colors were VERY well coordinated with our favorite cat, who was an orange tabby. Good thing we still like those colors, now that we have no more orange cats. :wink)

You're such a tease, Lars. You're not even going to drop a hint as to what the color looks like??

both are warm neutrals... probably in the vein of dijon...

Although Robert says Dijon isn't really a neutral. It does have a yellow/gold undertone going on, according to the photos, but I thought it was at least somewhat neutral in that it would go with a lot of different colors.

I don't have anything to add on the color choices, but I am LMAO about the names. I wonder how many copywriters Benjamin Moore has on staff?

We have BM Crown Point Sand in our bedroom, which has three windows. It changes color in different lights but always looks neutral (to me at least). We also have Carrington Beige in another part of our house...that is a little lighter than Crown Point Sand. Both rooms have white trim.

Bubeee, regarding white with caramel, lots of options ... you may want to look at BM Palace White 956 as a starting point.
