And it works for both mm/dd/year and dd/mm/year, so here in the "go it alone" United States, with our feet and inches and gallons and ounces, can join the rest of the world on this one.
How I learned what a palindrome was...
C: I understand this IS Bolton.
O: (still with the fake mustache) Yes?
C: You told me it was Ipswitch!
O: ...It was a pun.
C: (pause) A PUN?!?
O: No, no...not a pun...What's that thing that spells the same backwards as forwards?
C: (Long pause) A palindrome...?
O: Yeah, that's it!
C: It's not a palindrome! The palindrome of "Bolton" would be "Notlob"!! It don't work!!
Able was I 'ere I saw Elba
WTF is this even supposed to mean?
And what kind of word is 'ere? Were? Here? There? Where?

@DaveSchmidt, not really a stray apostrophe so much as indication that in these modern times we no longer use æ Sure, it’s easier to say ‘before’ or ‘soon’ but not half as pretty.
As the Oxford says re the derivation:
Happy sigh! I love language!

The context is Napoleon. As in he was able before he was banished to Elba.
"Ere" means before.

I actually figured it out about half an hour ago. I knew it was Napoleonic, but I was always thrown by the 'ere. (And I do the crossword, where that shows up constantly, so duh, color me stupid.)

What is the color of stupid? Seems like a challenge.

Taupe A color that doesn't know what family it belongs to.
And a variation on the theme today ... Thursday 20th February, 2020.
Whether you read it as Day/Month/Year (as Aussies, and a few other nationalities do) or Month/Day/Year, as Americans do (have i got that correct?), you can get a nice combination either way.
Day/Month/Year = 20/02/2020
Month/Day/Year = 02/20/2020
How about Year/Day/Month? 2020/20/02
Year/Month/Day: 2020/02/20
I've missed the earlier time in the morning .. 0220hrs, but you could play around with the sequence at 20 past 8 this evening ...2020hrs.
(I think I should have changed my name to nerd for the occasion )
Ha! I didn’t even notice the clock. (I’m a night shifter so usually stay up late.)

Just wrote "02-22-20" on a check and realized that this is our last palindrome date in this cycle.
Of course, I blame MOL for making my mind wander like that ...
