I get this when my computer senses that work I have done on that website (sending an email for example) may not have been processed yet. It is accompanied by the warning that my work may not have been saved. I see this is as helpful rather than irksome. What annoys me is the need for such a message to be generated in the first place given the alleged speed of my internet connection.
I'm a little annoyed by the websites that seem to follow me around and send me emails to remind me that I was looking at something. Some of the retail sites I visit well then send an email a few days later asking if I was still interested in the items that I would had clicked on.
I'm not sure if this is because I am logged into my Google account while using a Chrome browser. Or if I have left a cookie on that website when I bought something in the past that indicates who I am and what my email address is. To me this is like if I was browsing in a physical store, and a few days later someone knocked on my door and asked if I was still interested in those relaxed fit jeans that was looking at. I've understood that for a long time a website can use cookie technology then have me see ads for their products on other websites later on down the road. This seems a lot more direct and intrusive.
worst one- super creepy. If me or spouse is browsing an item and then it shows up on their device. Eewwww!!!!

when I am browsing online, I also open up a private window (called different things in different browsers)...otherwise you always get pop up ads with similar items for weeks. This is problematic when shopping for a gift for a household member or maybe a health need and you don't want any visitors seeing ads for things you previously browsed.

Yeah I should use that incognito function more. The pop ups don't bother me but getting an email means I'm clearly leaving more of a trail than I want to.

This is not what I am talking about. I am referring to sites that just don't want you to leave without subscribing or buying something. The pop-up gives you a choice of, for example, selecting "Sign me up for a daily email on the latest breaking news" or "I don't care about the news."
I increasingly come across websites that have a popup window—"Are your SURE you want to leave this page?"—as soon as it detects I am x-ing out. This is horribly irritating and rude. It's analogous to a store owner blocking the door when a customer tries to leave. If you are a website designer, stop it. Tell your clients that customers despise this.
