WAZE not finding signal.

For almost a week the WAZE app running on my iPhone 5s has not been able to find a signal and has been nearly useless. (It seems to use cellular to come up with improvised directions but these are not optimal routes and it has not been able to provide ETA, distances, etc. )

Anyone else having the same problem?

This happened to us all weekend!! We were out of town so we thought maybe that was the issue. It's been okay for me today but I only used it once.

I had this problem Friday evening, but apparently it was a server problem with Waze.

When I used it today it worked correctly.

I also had this problem, intermittently, last week. I thought it was just me.

I had a problem with it briefly last week. I use it almost every day and it works great.

You think it was a server problem with WAZE? Or you know something? I depend on WAZE and if it's not going to work, I need an alternative, stat, as they say. Thanks.

This weekend I was traveling with my Dad. We both turned on Waze. My Droid connected fine... his Samsung had connection issues.

You're not the first one to suggest Google maps BUT I can't figure out how to get the voice turn-by-turn directions to work on the Google maps app. Also, does it display ETA and miles-to-go like Waze?

IIRC, Google Maps displays how much time until you get to your destination, but unlike Waze, doesn't seem to show the est time of arrival (so you have to do your own math... and if you don't do the computation and remember the ETA at the beginning, then if the estimated travel time gets longer (with traffic, etc), it's harder to tell that you are expecting to be delayed).

There is a way to get voice turn-by-turn in Google Maps. I actually switched to Waze because Google Maps changed their voice to what sounded like a perky young female... because when I'm driving and stuck in traffic, I just want a robot talking to me in a deadpan voice. Not an annoyingly energetic teen voice.

Unfortunately, now Waze now seems to have taken the "Tom" voice away, and only has "Jane". Bring back my deadpan male robot!

I find Waze to be more accurate than Google maps in terms of estimated travel time and selecting the best route.

If you're going anywhere near NYC or some place that you can conceive of being crowded Waze is a must. It knows when you should take side streets through Leonia/Ft. Lee to avoid 60 minute back ups on the GWB. I trust it completely. I'd drive into a lake if it told me too, because I know there would be a good reason for it to tell me to do it.

But not in Brazil.........

Worked fine in Arizona all weekend. Local server issues, maybe (if it even works that way...)

Love Waze!

They change the algorithm every once in a while, which changes how it directs you. About 6 months ago or so, the algorithm started avoiding more traffic lights. My route to work changed, and it directed me to take a left at an intersection with no light... across a dangerous section of highway where there are two very fast lanes of traffic in each direction, and not great visibility. Um, no.

Since the available algorithm options are only 'fastest' or 'shortest', it doesn't necessarily pick the shortest route when time is approximately equivalent. So, I've occasionally beat Waze's time estimates going my 'shortcut' way (with more lights) over it's 'fastest' way (with more highway, but is several miles longer). And it doesn't seem great in accounting for which are 'fast' lights vs. the lights that are so badly timed that it only lets a few cars through at each green, so it takes several rounds to get through at rush hour.

I wish its algorithm for route selection was more customizable.

I had my favorite Waze understatement of all time yesterday. "Vehicle stopped on shoulder ahead."

Ignore this: Photo of truck on fire not loading.

I've been driving to Princeton for work a few days a week (don't ask) and I noticed that WAVE directions differ depending on the time of day. And it seems to know, without any customization, to avoid Route 1 down there. This is why I like WAZE.

But when it doesn't work, I realize how dependent I am on it.

You mean I have to find my way all by myself??

Google Maps also adapts its directions to current traffic conditions. Sometimes, in the middle of a trip, it tells me that I should change plans.

Waze does the same.

Waze does the same.

That's because Google owns Waze and utilizes its data for traffic conditions on Google Maps.

LOL. Then again, a lot of times they're a little too alarmist - like, roadkill. It's okay, I can probably avoid that without it really slowing my trip down...

My use of the word "also" referred to Waze. In other words, since people were mentioning how Waze does this, I thought it worth mentioning that google maps also does it.

We've been using Waze for at least three and a half years now, and have had exactly two failures over that time. Neither seemed to be a connection issue -- it was giving us spoken directions both times. It just simply sent us to the wrong place. Otherwise it's been great. I don't know how it compares to Google Maps (or Apple Maps) because it's so good I don't feel any need to comparison shop.

For those of you who use Waze a lot, please take the time to report the map issues when you have them. It really helps the rest of the community.

Google Maps will probably eventually become as powerful as Waze, but it's traffic information isn't quite at the same level (it's a tad better than what a GPS with traffic gets, as that information is pretty much worthless).

The best part is the ability to share ride information. If I'm on my way home from somewhere I can just allow my wife to check in on my ride and then I can avoid those awkward 'Where are you?' text messages. I'm never quite sure if they're a trap to try and catch me texting while driving!

I've tried this but you have to login to the webpage, etc etc. Why can't I just send a message and be done with it?

I think there is a "report map issue" button right in the app itself. So (if you have a passenger) you can report the map issue at the time it occurs.

Yes, you can report an issue. But then they send you a message asking for further detail which requires the login, etc.

I have reported several issues. It is easier to do it online and not through the app.

The Leonia/Ft. Lee alternative has been a time saver, but I wish Waze had a feature that allowed you to select how much time a driver wants to save. I have often found myself zigging and zagging through side streets to save less than a minute. It seems that Waze is programmed to pick the fastest route even if it involves 5 extra turns and only saves 30 seconds
