WASSUP with the new WAWA?

Anything happening with the new Wawa on Springfield Avenue?

Variance and ordinance changes required according to fairly recent TC meeting. Perhaps someone from College Hill Neighborhood Association or Hilton Neighborhood Association would have more current information since both groups have been following this closely.

This is just terrible; we're going to miss Hoagiefest.

Which side of Springfield Ave is it going to be on? I assumed it would be on the Bank Of America side, but my husband says he believes it will be taking over the PSE&G building on the other side of Springfield Ave and that Jacoby St was only given as a land mark.

You are correct ("as usual", your husband should say). PSEG is where the new Avalon residential buildings are going.

And I think the ordinances were approved. I tried to go to 7-11 on Monday night at 11:30pm, but they were closed. So I'm kind of glad Wawa will be coming to town.

Raising a topic  from the dead: has anyone heard any news on the (hopefully still happening) new Wawa? It's been a few months with no new news.

wawa trivia -

wawa has a store right off of the first and last 280 exits.

It's happening!

@jeffl TELL US MORE! We have been waiting too long, deprived of hoagies and soft pretzels.

I know where the Exit 1 Wawa is, I used to drive past it on my way to work. Great coffee, good gas prices, awful food and sandwiches. But 280 ends in Jersey City in a pretty nondescript, inelegant spot. Where's that Wawa?

I have no current inside information ... but my cousin works for Wawa and headed up their major expansion into Florida. When I told her about my excitement for the WaWa projected for Maplewood she said be sure to be patient.

She told me that on average from start to finish on a build out it is about 3 months in Florida and 3 years in New Jersey and most of that is regulation wrangling and inspections and pre-approvals on the underground gas tanks. If the site had pre-existing gas tanks it can even be longer.

Hopefully she is wrong oh oh

For what it's worth, a small billboard has appeared, on Springfield Avenue, in the lot between the old plumbing business and what was recently a small gym (formerly the Maplewood Mart) across from the Avalon Bay/PSE&G construction site:  "Wawa coming soon!"

Vic said they're looking at a January open.

3 years is about right. This has been under review awhile, including several community meetings with neighbors and much discussion about potential operating hours at the TC.
