Violin vigil Saturday July 4 11 am

A violin vigil for Elijah McClain who was killed by police while walking home in August 2019.

Isn't tomorrow the Fourth of July, the celebration of our country's birth? I never heard about this vigil until now. I'm just reading about Elijah McClain being killed after a police encounter last August in Colorado. It certainly needs more investigation but why on the Fourth? I was hoping we would have some small celebration, something for our children to remember. I'm all for vigils and the violins sound lovely but why tomorrow.

Why not on the Fourth?  Shouldn't our children remember that we need to fulfill the promise of the American Revolution?

If we are serious about "with liberty and justice for all," the country's birthday is a fitting time to turn our thoughts to people denied liberty, people who meet with grave injustice. Too many Americans don't experience the freedoms we usually celebrate on the 4th.

Perhaps Maplewood could copy this Massachusetts tradition of reading the speech on July 4th along with the Declaration.

 Good idea.

They do that reading annually up at Washington’s Headquarters in Morristown, though this year I imagine it was online.

Didn’t MOL used to do a ‘reading’ a few years ago? I know at Thanksgiving there used to be a gathering a group-sing of Alice’s Restaurant, but I’m sure I also remember a group recitation for July 4 maybe 10 yrs back or so. (Back when there were regular F2F picnics etc)
