using AirPlay with an iPhone?

Question: Is there a way I can stream AirPlay content through my iPhone?  More specifically, I want to stream AirPlay content (WFMU's alternate streams) to my Sonos speakers. TIA.

Can't you just use bluetooth for that?

I don't have any experience with airplay and i think my sonos speakers are older - here's the AI response:

1️⃣ If your Sonos speakers support AirPlay 2 (easiest)

Many newer Sonos models support AirPlay 2 directly (One, Beam, Arc, Era, Five, Move, etc.).

How to do it:

  1. Open the WFMU alternate stream on your iPhone (Safari, VLC, or another app).

  2. Start playing the stream.

  3. Open Control Center on your iPhone.

  4. Tap the AirPlay / Audio output icon.

  5. Select your Sonos speaker.

Your iPhone becomes the AirPlay source and the Sonos speaker plays it.

✔ Works with almost any audio stream
✔ No extra software needed

2️⃣ If your Sonos speakers do NOT support AirPlay

Older Sonos speakers (Play:1, Play:3, Playbar, etc.) can't receive AirPlay directly.

But you can bridge it through a single AirPlay-compatible Sonos speaker.

Steps:

  1. AirPlay from the iPhone to the AirPlay-capable Sonos speaker.

  2. Open the Sonos app.

  3. Group that speaker with your other Sonos speakers.

The audio will sync across the group.

3️⃣ Using an iPhone app to stream the URL directly to Sonos

Some apps can send streams straight to Sonos.

Good options:

  • Sonos app (sometimes) — if the station URL works

  • SonoPhone

  • iBroadcast

  • mconnect

If you have the direct WFMU stream URL, these apps can push it to Sonos without AirPlay.

4️⃣ Workaround if the stream only plays in a browser

If the WFMU alternate stream is just a webpage player:

  1. Open it in Safari.

  2. Start playback.

  3. Use AirPlay from Control Center to your Sonos.

Safari audio AirPlays fine.

We have a Sonos Soundbar 2 znd it supports AirPlay for music. I wonder if it varies by Sonos product?

Thank you, Jamie. I'll give that a try.

Why not just play WFMU streams from Tune in in Sonos?

actually - i just searched for WMFU on Sonos and it came up in Sonos radio - I was able to connect directly.

I tried Tune in first - but it wanted me to reauthorize and sign up.

The alternate streams? The Give the Drummer Some stream? The radio broadcast is east to get on Tune In. (Yes! There it is, but SONOS seems not able to connect.)
