The Fun Facts thread

When pursued by a predator, a fleeing quokka mum will eject her baby from her pouch.

The launched joey will flail about on the ground, making weird hissing noises and attracting the predator's attention while the mother makes good her escape.

She can, and will, reproduce again.

Fun fact: Gloria Jones and Marc Bolan (T. Rex) were a couple. Tragic fact: Jones was driving when a crash killed Bolan in 1977.

The plural of Cyclops is Cyclopes.

Fun fact: until 1980 the Short Hills Mall was an open-air mall (or strip mall). It was a two year project to enclose it.

Oh yeah?  ...Well enclosing the Garden State Plaza (the largest mall in NJ) was a 3-year project (enclosed between 1981 and 1984). The existing J.C. Penney basement was given a new entrance on the lower level, but since the floors were at slightly different elevations, that entrance features the shortest escalator in North America, at a height of six steps.

(FWIW: We were looking to move to NJ in the early 1980's, and I remember shopping in the Garden State Plaza on a rainy day/night, and they were working to enclose it. It was a strange mix of puddles, stepping stones, and construction zones between stores)

The Velvet Underground played their first live show on Dec. 11, 1965 — at Summit High School!

The easternmost part of the isthmus of Panama is on the Pacific, and the westernmost part is on the Atlantic.

Actually Panama is on the Pacific and the Caribbean, not the Atlantic. And they're connected by some sort of canal, as I recall.

 Damn, Ripley's lied to me.

The Caribbean isn't really separate from the Atlantic.

Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman aka Flo and Eddie aka The Turtles sing background vocals on Get It On.

Fact: The Turtles were the funnest band from the ’60s.

Fun fact: One year before Rolling Stone first appeared, Jann Wenner was writing a column for the Daily Californian at UC.

I'll never get that image out of my mind @marksierra! That replaces all of the internet videos of animal kingdom moms nursing assorted species. This mark is what I'm left with!

It's the birthday of Windows!

Yep. Windows 1.0 was introduced to the public on this day in 1983. Actual rollout was on the 20th.

Accurately called a "cover" not a remake.  Movies are remade, songs are covered.

See now that's a fun fact.

Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan, due to contract and other stupid reasons, couldn't use their own names or the Turtles name when they went to work for Frank Zappa so he named them The Fluorescent Leech and Eddie. I saw them record Live At The Fillmore (at the Fillmore East) in 1971 where they parodied the off-Broadway rock musical popular at the time. Also known as Zappa's White Album, it included such great songs as Mud Shark, Bwana Dik, What Kind of Girl Do You Think We Are (sung by Flo and Eddie) and Tears Begin to Fall. A favorite Zappa effort of mine.

Happy Together is the perfect pop song.

And that's a fact!

Roger that! They did a great Holiday run at The Bottom Line for many years. Very entertaining (as was Kaylan's autobiography).

Continuing the background vocals FF that's Aimee Mann on Rush's Time Stand Still...
