The Cross Country Skiing Thread

I love cross country skiing! Conditions have been excellent last week even at Underhill Field. There seems to be a fellow cross country skiier and I wanted to see if you are also on MOL.

If you have any favorite spots nearby, let me know.

I have not skied in quite some time. Cross country skiers made South Mountain Res. woods roads walkable for hikers this past month. Thank you skiers. Jockey Hollow and Watchung Reservation were good x- country sites in the past.

Thanks, dickf3. Jockey Hollow sounds worth a try. Concerning walking in x-country tracks: I am not thrilled when people do walk in the tracks. I understand why they do it but it takes the fun out for the skier.

Not very helpful to you, but my 70+ yr old mom was cross country skiing around her apartment complex in Bergen county last week.

I've just starting XC skiing again after years.  I tried the South Mountain reservation and if was OK in the wooded areas.  I hadn't thought of Underhill--good idea.  I understand Jockey Hollow is also good, and Duke Farms on week days.

Is it possible to XC ski on golf courses in the area? I feel like someone mentioned (or I read something about) skiing on a West Orange golf course a few years ago.

Here's a link to some NJ options:

Thanks for the info. Maybe I run into you one of these days. I will be laying a track today at Underhill.

Sorry I missed you!  I'm going to Underhill today, so I'll look for your track!

Love this sport! We've been to East Orange Golf Course, 440 Parsonage Hill Rd, Short Hills.

West Orange owns Rock Spring. Mayor Parisi says it's perfectly fine to use the course for cross country skiing. Not sure if he meant only West Orange residents, but I am sure they won't be checking ID. My husband said the course is good, but very windy, being at the top of the mountain.

I went to Underhill the last few days. It was gorgeous with the sun, blue sky and snow. I met the other XC skier. His name is Andrew and he is from my neighborhood. He told me that he uses the Maplewood golf course for XC skiing. He has never asked anybody, just did it and always found other tracks as well. Thanks Sprout for bringing this up & Addiemoose for confirming for the East Orange GC. Hope that we get a few more days out of the new white ... See you in the tracks!

Hope you made it out there. I made the track on the baseball field only on Saturday. It was still good on Sunday.

For the Mwood golf course, there are no no-trespassing signs at the end of Pierson Rd. if you want deniability.
