"The stranded mega-container vessel, Ever Given in the Suez Canal, is holding up an estimated $400 million an hour in trade, based on the approximate value of goods that are moved through the Suez every day, according to shipping data and news company Lloyd’s List.

Lloyd’s values the canal’s westbound traffic at roughly $5.1 billion a day, and eastbound traffic at around $4.5 billion a day. The blockage is further stressing an already strained supply chain, said Jon Gold, vice president of supply chain and customs policy for the National Retail Federation."

They should get everyone in Egypt, and everyone brings their own rope, and they tie all the ropes along the side of the boat, and everyone pulls it as hard as they can. If we get all the people in Egypt, that weight can turn it and then they can steer the boat.”

Might have worked if the Jewish people hadn't escaped from slavery in Egypt, which is being celebrated starting at sundown tomorrow.

Before this happened there was already a major crisis happening with global freight.  This is just throwing more gasoline on the fire.  What a mess.


It is really two separate issues coming together.

1.  Covid crisis (in combination with other factors) has led to a crisis (container rates from China to US have gone from less than $2K to approx. $10K).

2.  It takes a crew of approx. 16 to sail a container ship, whether said ship carries 5K, 10K or now 20K containers.  However, this new class of container ships has forced a widening of the Panama canal, raising of the Bayonne(?) bridge combined with dredging of the channel, etc.  As far as I know, the Suez canal has not been widened, so their margin for error has shrunk measurably with the advent of these much larger vessels.

Also, with vessels of this size, the distance it takes to execute a course correction, is measured in miles.  Thus, the present Suez canal is near obsolete.

Thread drift:  In the 'good old days', once a vessel docked, your container came off in a day or less.  

  • Now it can be 2-3 days, which many companies have not recognized yet.  
  • In Port of Newark, there is a shortage of trucks to haul the containers to their final destination.

This threatens tight time lines for 'just in time' manufacturing plants.
