Old Thread About Election Consequences

Asking for a friend.

Actually, asking for a lot of friends who were disregarded.

Whassamatta?  You no like Bernie?

The Establishment Crumbles, The Left Rises

Sure.......I voted for the woman most qualified to be the next President ............and ir wasn't her.

Visions of the US treasury becoming a Clinton slush fund were just too strong.

Much better for the entire economy to be a Trump slush fund.

So does this ^^^^ mean we'll shortly have a balanced court, that Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security won't be gutted this year? That environmental regs won't go away? That people won't be randomly stopped and asked to show their papers? That white supremacists will crawl into a hole? Her election doesn't vindicate anti-HRC folks. With Clinton in office, we would not be at the pre-fascism state we're in now.

And in the meantime there will be another hard right conservative Supreme Court justice.  And another if Ruth Bader Ginsburg (86) retires.

The next oldest Justice after Ginsburg is Steven Breyer (79).

Here in NJ the Bernie supporters didn't do much to swing the national election.  I can't say what they did to submarine Hillary in states like Florida, Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania, or the people who voted for Johnson or Stein in those states.  It's impossible to know.  But what we're faced with now is a Supreme Court that's going to be solidly packed with conservatives, some of whom are pretty young, for some time to come.

So if we end up seeing Roe V Wade overturned, I hope the Bernie backers will at least be able to admit that in this situation it would have been better if Hillary won.

You can use the same picture and change the caption when Roe v. Wade is overturned.

Thank you, nohero, for your humor and perspective. I'm heartened by Ocasio's victory but saddened by Jeff Beals's defeat. We have a home in Ulster County, NY, so we vote there. Beals was the Sanders-esque candidate, and Antonio Delgado was the Clinton-esque candidate, and Delgado won. We had SEVEN Democrats in the primary. But the most important thing is to defeat John Faso who has been pretty bad.

But I figure you're really talking about Kennedy's retirement announcement. And yes, I'm scared. I thought the Trump presidency would prove to be bad, but it's turning out worse than I could have predicted.

Very nice. The exact type of candidate that I campaigned for when I was learning about politics back in the 60s.

But in the words of the one you love to hate,

"What difference does it make"?

The train has left the station.

Everyone who let Trump win is responsible for the consequences.

(And by "let Trump win" I mean "didn't support the Dem")

Mr. Reingold suffers from a failure of imagination.

It can be very, very bad.

 Stephen Breyer.

I do not accept that those who voted for Jill Stein swung the election to Trump. There are always third-party voters, right and left. If there were only two choices on the ballot those who vote third-party would just stay home.

I think this is a discussion for another time and place. Now we must all hang together or we will all hang separately.

Actually I will leave it up to you...........surprisingly when I checked 100% of funds donated to the Trump foundation went to charitable endeavors

Of the Clinton Foundation 4%of funds collected went to charity

Also......as far as I could reference only one sitting Secretary of State charged a fee for Facetime

with her by visitors.  Almost 50% of those who would see her were required to make a contribution

to the Clinton Foundation

Along that line......the two senior Dem party leaders are Joe Biden and Bernie........both good men who are up in age.   Should the party not be developing a potential leader who is possibly as young as 50 or 60.

Sigh.

On the one hand I agree with you, LOST, that this would be a bad time for intraparty squabbling.  On the other hand I feel like there's an elephant in the room.  What happens in 2020 if an "establishment" candidate gets the Democratic nomination?  Will there be bad blood again and the far left of the party stays home on election day?

Joe Crowley picked up his guitar and dedicated "Born to Run" (I can't listen to it but the thought is in the right place) to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, indicating a willingness to enthusiastically back her as the candidate.  I heard an interview with her two days ago in which she refused to say she would support him if he won the nomination.  Not a huge deal in a pretty safe blue seat, but is that the trend going forward?

2020 is not going to be easy.  Trump is constantly energizing his base, and throwing enough bones to the mainstream Republicans that I don't think he's going to have to fight too hard for them, especially if he delivers two (and maybe more) hard right conservatives to overturn Roe.  If far left Democrats decide to stay home if their candidate doesn't get nominated, then you can probably add a couple more Trump SC justices to the list between 2021-2025.

Sarry four the mispelling of Jusitis Breyer's naim.

No, but then we would have one coming in the next election.  We were on that road.

Did you have to say that now?  question

Just for a reality check for those of you who think the sky is falling.  Justice Kennedy was the author of the Citizens United majority opinion, was a consistent supporter of the 2nd amendment and voted with the majority in Bush v. Gore.  His jurisprudence was certainly more liberal as it related to certain social issues (gay rights, abortion) but he was by no means the second coming of Earl Warren.

Take a deep breath.  It's going to be ok.

What are you smoking and where can I get some? So we're going to replace a pretty conservative Justice with a really f****** conservative Justice. And that's cool?

I'm starting to think this is bothering me more than I originally thought. I'm leaving my initial reaction alone, although I thought about deleting it, because it's kind of obnoxious. But I will stand by my premise that it seems likely we're trading a conservative for a more radical conservative.

We're also thinking about an alternative reality in which there would be two new more liberal and Progressive justices on the Supreme Court. If a Democrat had democrat had won the presidency in 2016.

The Democratic Party managed to nominate the one person that was so disliked it lost them the election.   Trump would make three campaign appearances a day.  She would make one and go home to take a nap.  Her "basketful of deplorable" quote told half the country that she thought she was better than them.   Practically passing out at a public appearance and having the Secret Service take her to Chelsea's apt rather then a hospital questioned her judgement.

Dear Lord. You're telling me that you're getting your statistics from a message board with absolutely no verifiable facts? And then you change the subject to Hillary Clinton's Behavior.

I guess I hadn't seen someone had already been nominated and that they were "really f***** conservative" - whatever it is that that means.

Why don't we wait to see who is nominated and give them the courtesy of judging them on their qualifications.

Yeah, that's fair. And I did amend my reply earlier. I just think that the likelihood of someone in the same mold of Kennedy getting the nomination is pretty low right now.

Ocasio-Cortez. Perfecto. Agradecemos a todos que apoyan a la candidatura de Ocasio-Cortez.  Es precisamente la representacion necesitada en las proximas eleciones.  Todos debemos hacer lo necesario para asegurar la victora de esta candidata.
