Chris Matthews just quit on live TV!

That was like watching that scene in Network.

First they take away Keith Olbermann and now Chris Matthews.

OK, I'll play, who do you like. You are on again off again with Rachel, I think a few years ago you were fed up with Kornaki, you're not big on Chuck Todd so, who makes the cut?

Chris is certainly at retirement age.

Matthews has been a sexist AH for many years. I'm really surprised he's lasted this long.

Look, most of these clowns on cable news are just that - clowns. Their main ability is to be able to keep talking non-stop, since dead air is the absolute one thing that can't be tolerated. What they actually say is unimportant, as long as it kind of makes sense.

I happen to watch a lot cable news, which i realize is kind of hypocritical of me. I mostly use it as background noise, but when I decide to actually pay attention, I can confidently say that I have rarely learned anything important from these people. (other than what passes for the news of the day, which is a whole other subject) There is little insight that they offer. Very little. And the parade of panelists is usually even worse.

One slight exception, among those I watch, is Lawrence O'Donnell. He's sharp and pretty insightful, owing to his years of real political experience.

The other exception is Maddow - occasionally. She has a good team of researchers, and her opening pieces are sometimes outstanding.  But just as often, she goes way around the bend and out on a limb while jumping the shark.

It's simply not reasonable to expect a high level of content 5 hours a week. It's just not. And that's why 90% of the content is just filler. Nothing more than a clown show, reciting bland conventional wisdom, to an audience that is not there to be challenged but to be massaged.

IMHO

But it was the manner. I found more about the pressure that was put on him.

It took everyone by surprise.. He would have never retired before the election.

Lawrence O'Donnell will always be a favorite, as he was one of the writer/producers of my favorite series, West Wing. It's the only series that I have on DVD for bouts of insomnia or a needed escape from the news.

I like many of the MSNBC hosts more than the hosts on CNN so there I'll stay and I'll miss Chris Matthews. I still miss his Sunday show.

here's some background reading on Matthews. Be sure to read the Mediamatters links.

At least 20 years too late. Good riddance

Tough crowd.

As I was saying, I'm going to miss Chris Matthews.

Good riddance.  This was way overdue.

He lasted long enough to embarrass himself. He's from another era.

Agree with drummerboy 100%. Cable news itself has been headed for the junk pile for 10 years, and Chris Mathews was just ballast. But really the whole concept needs to be deleted.

Cable news has become cable discussion/analysis.  There's about two hours of real news and 22 hours of endless chatter.

Yup on O'Donnell, and I've got the first four seasons of TWW on DVD, too. In times of crisis I often turn to it (or Deadwood)...

I wonder who they will move to the 7 slot. I remember the juggling that went on when they forced Keith Olbermann out. It would be a prime spot for Lawrence.

As I can never find anything to watch and I'm usually painting for hours, I look forward to certain hosts.

And with all of the debates and primaries, my dance card is pretty full till November!

 I think kornacki

My friend works on the Chris Hayes show. I jokingly asked him if they'll bring Olbermann back. He said he has a better chance of hosting than Olbermann coming back. I like Katy Tur. Glad to see some people like O'Donnell. I can't make it through an hour of his show. Maybe they'll put Brian Williams in Matthews' spot.

 I love Chris Hayes.

Katy Tur would be great. I really enjoy Stephanie Ruhle, I like her financial background and she's both tough and silly. Katy Tur takes no prisoners as well.

Does Chris Matthews have some kind of agreement not to go to another network?

Matthews just left his own show, but will still be a commentator on other MSNBC shows, after things calm down.

That would be reasonable. It looked like a surprise exit. Kornaki looked like he was called of the bench with no preparation.

Any guess  who will fill in?

Ex-Senator Clair McCaskill is an MSNBC commentator.

I understand there is a certain Ex Mayor of a small mid-western city who is out of work.

I can imagine producers at MSNBC trying to snag Pete.

Nicole Wallace may get his spot temporarily at least. My friend said nobody on Matthews' staff knew he was leaving.

That would be great! I saw Joy Reid in the slot yesterday. She has done a lot of fill in, aside from her Morning Joy spot.

I would guess that time slot is coveted. I'll bet Brian Williams would like moving to an earlier time.

Might be interesting to do something a bit experimental. I think Chris Hayes is doing quite well with his live shows.

Matthews exit because it was done at the beginning of the show seemed like it was meant to stun his employers. It felt like a, " you can't fire me, I quit." No way would he want to leave in the middle of this election cycle. I went on MSNBC's site looking for a way to log in my disappointment. Couldn't find the contact link.

Also wanted to comment on twitter but not long ago I changed my account and now I'm trying to reconnect.

He also hasn't looked too healthy lately, Hope he is OK.

Chris had prostate surgery in October.  I was wondering whether he was on some kind of hormones or something recently that could have affected his judgment, causing him to be a bit less inhibited than usual.

No, he's been an uninhibited ahole for many, many years.

I totally do not get his appeal. He's just insufferable.
