Stop & Shop upgrade

May 20, 2026 at 4:04pm

When did the update take place - I was so surprised when I saw the updates for the first time today.  I think it's an improvement - just will take some getting used to - it feels like the aisles are a little wider.

It’s been ongoing the last 6-7 weeks.  Lots of stuff moved around. New signage inside and a refreshed facade. New floors. They upgraded the self checkout kiosks a while back.

I think they also went with taller shelves to add space.

The International aisle now has more than just Ortega taco kits, Goya beans and La Choy sauces.  Produce is getting rearranged and has been in a bit of upheaval the last few days. They’re installing dairy fridges with glass doors in the back. Probably a big energy efficiency advantage.

ahh - I was away - then hit Trader's the past few shopping ventures.  The signage is definitely stronger and shelves definitely feel taller.  I think I'll get used to it.

I couldn't find the cookies until I went through most of the aisles. I think the signage doesn't indicate them, and now... I don't even remember which aisle I found them in.

Did you clear your cookies?

They’re to the left as you walk in. After soda and seltzer maybe?

I found them only after I wandered through every single aisle to the right of produce as you walk in. Now that I think about it, I believe they were in one of the end-of-the-aisle displays, and I just got lucky they happened to be on sale that day. But I'll know for next time to start to the left!

Impressive  international aisleS - City Market on Irvington Avenue.

Definitely give yourself extra time!

I was there yesterday and it's really kind of a mess right now. I hope that whatever they still plan to do will make it worth all the changes in location for many items. It took me twice as long as usual to pick up the (few) items on my list because everything except refrigerated items and produce has been moved. I wonder what that really accomplishes. I asked an employee whose idea it was to move everything around and his answer was "Some guy in Boston."  I'll be at the Millburn ShopRite for most of my shopping until it settles and then I'll assess the result.

Have ya tried the Shop Rite on Morris Turnpike in Springfield (or maybe it's in Summit)?

Junk food is always in the middle aisles.

After I thought I went through the entire store I realized that I still didn't have any cookies. Re-circling, I discovered that cookies were now in aisle 1 directly across from the pharmacy! And it looks like most of the 'junk' aisles are also located opposite the pharmacy!!!!

Rather odd planning. Move the OTC medical items away from the pharmacy area to what I'm guessing is near shampoo, etc., in the center of the store.

Since I was there around lunch time, I did notice the high school kids had already figured out where chips and such were relocated.

The layout of every grocery store is calculated to make customers walk past as much product as possible before they reach what they came for.  That's why milk is always in a back corner.  I'm sure thought went into this layout for just that reason.

It’s interesting because the first three aisles all the way to left seem to be filled with junk like cookies and soda and chips and such.

You could walk through the front door of Stop and Shop and go through produce straight back to the deli. Then to the right along the back past seafood and meat, the the dairy aisle. To the front past bakery and you’re back to the registers. Completely avoid the junk aisles altogether.

Yes, but if you wanted junk you have to pass a lot of other stuff.

I really do NOT like that Shop Rite. (It's in Springfield.)
