Stolen Halloween Candy

Yearly since my boys became too old to trick or treat, I set a plastic pumpkin out with candy and a note, "Have Fun! Please take One." I usually have a friend who visits from NYC with her child to trick or treat in our 'hood and kids can still get candy while we're out, but this year, I have a horrible cold but still I set the pumpkin out. During my cold fog, I'd view my Ring periodically and everyone was so sweet, polite and honest. For some reason, not caught on my Ring, I laid down for a bit and looked at my phone to view outside and my pumpkin was gone. I kept an eye on it not to see if someone would steal it but to see when I could sneak down and refill it. I have scanned my videos numerous times but cannot find the culprit. Whoever it was, took the pumpkin with all the candy and left trash on my porch. This is some BS. I've been viewing The Ring alerts and I know my house wasn't the only one hit. It's incidents like this that take all the freakin' joy out of events. I hope they get a mouth full of cavities.

This year was particularly bad for whatever reason.  Squad cars forced a crowd off College Hill.  This morning I read that someone had a pumpkin thrown in through their window in Hilton.

That goes well beyond normal Halloween shenanigans.  Not that I condone stealing candy, I've never done it and I have taught my children to only take one piece each from an honor bowl so that everyone can enjoy the holiday, but with the honor system it is expected to happen on occasion.  But breaking someone's ******* window, on the other hand, is true criminal behavior.

This is what I've decided: will only give out candy until dark -- when the little ones are out -- and shut it down after that. Our neighborhoods have always been a welcoming haven for MAPSO but for Newark and Irvington and Orange as well. It's such a shame that some have chosen to ruin it for others. Throwing a pumpkin through someone's window means to me that this group was never out to trick or treat. They were out to cause harm and commit crimes. And they were out on the streets with your children. That's scary.

The nice weather seemed to encourage more trick-or-treaters than usual.
