Sad DD is so addicted to work he can't stop with no job and spend some time reinventing himself in CA!
I thought last night was OK ... It's the usual season opener reset ... Positioning everyone on the stage, if you will ... Love that Freddie is in the mix ... Wondering if Sal is every going to resurface ... Thought the lady on the plane thing was weird ... Was it a dream? Her husband "died of thirst" ... Anyway. Liked it. Glad to have it back.
I loved that whole 'died of thirst' thing - assumed he was an alcoholic and if so that's a great way to broach the subject.
Can't stand that it's the last year... but you know what I loved is that Don didn't take that woman up on her offer. I liked that a lot.

I did too. I thought that whole scene was really touching. We've never heard Don admit that he's a terrible husband, and I thought that exposed a new side of Don. He's far from the arrogant husband he was to Betty, but he's also still fundamentally the same person deep down. He's a man who just loves and is fascinated by women (especially brunettes!). But yet he resisted the temptation at the end, so what does that mean?
I loved Pete in this episode, and I usually can't stand watching him! As I said on Twitter, his ridiculousness finally fits in somewhere
Those pants, ha! I enjoyed Peggy being taken down a notch by the new guy. I also thought it was an interesting twist to see that the idea she was fighting so far for was actually Don's. They really do share a similar sensibility, even when they butt heads.
Did anyone else think for a second that Don was going to jump/fall off the balcony at the end, like the opening credits?! It was unlikely but I did think, "wow, THAT sure would start things off with a bang!"
I wonder when they're going to bring up Don's past life again. The previous season left with him taking the kids to his childhood home, yet this episode there was no mention of anything personal except Megan.

I am always excited when Allan Havey appears on shows (He was on an episode of Louie). He now plays Lou Avery in Mad Men.
He used to host a late night talk show on the Comedy Channel/Comedy Central called "Nite After Nite with Allan Havey." The show had an "Audience of One" who got to go on camera and talk a little bit. I was the audience of one back in 1991 and it was a great experience (I was 17 year's old at the time).

To me, the ongoing references to the broken balcony door in Don's apartment has been Chekhov's gun -- you know they're going to use it sooner or later.

Me thinks Lou is going to give Peggy a hard time. She's used to being the darling of the office, especially with DD, but Lou doesn't seem to find her as charming.

Lou is a male chauvinist and a bigot ... Not uncommon for that era ... Interesting that both Don and Peggy ended up crying at the end of the night ...

I think it means Don is giving up on himself. :/ And we thought the same thing about the jumping out of the window...it's like they are setting up a final scene from the opening credits.
I think that the absolute last thing that will EVER happen on Mad Men is a recreation of the opening credits ... Won't happen.

And I think you're right that the series certainly wouldn't end on a recreation of the opening credits. Matthew Weiner is more clever than that and likes to play tricks. Starting the season off that way would have been a big shocking twist though, and that made it seem possible to me for a second.
Don and Peggy together -blech. That would annoy me. Don and Joan is interesting... though I think she's smarter than that... and I think ultimately Don ends up alone.
Just rewatched the Don & Freddie scene on AMC.com ... Freddie says, "It's been two months ..." It seemed as if more time had passed with each of the characters, but maybe not ...

I laughed when the agent said Megan would be great for Bracken's World...I think Leslie Nielsen was on that show.
As for wine references/appearances, Don and the woman seated next to him both get generously filled glasses of a white wine that looked as if it could have been a barrel aged chardonnay. The agent when ordering wine to celebrate with Megan and Don specifically asks for "French champagne". At the time, it was still legal for domestic sparkling wine to be called Champagne, although it was often just still wine with gas added, not a part of the second fermentation process...so it wasn't unusual for him to make the distinction.
@hankzona I was wondering if you'd have a comment on that. I took the "French champagne" reference as a sign the agent was kind of an ass and trying too hard to impress But perhaps not the case!

He most likely was being an ass and making the distinction emphatically. Or else he might have gotten Andre's or Korbel. He was going for the cachet request.
Now in contrast, on "Selfridge's" Sunday night, they not only were drinking Champagne for a special fundraising event (without mentioning its country of origin), they clearly showed the wooden crates the bottles are in...Ruinart, the oldest established Champagne house. "Call The Midwife" had a scene featuring Campari....and martinis seemed most prominent on "The Good Wife" this week...there is my tv pop culture drinks round-up for the weekend.
I have very little emotional involvement with any of these characters. It wasn't always that way but is now. Maybe that will change as the season progresses, but I am feeling now just like I did when season 6 ended: feh.
