Would you consider adding any Vinyasa classes to evenings or weekends? It seems that they are all during the day in the work week, which is not feasible for people who work regular 9-5 jobs. Thanks!

PurpleMonkeyDshwashr, this Sunday's Community Class (by donation) at 7pm on April 27 is All Levels Vinyasa with Varitta Siryon. We have offered evening vinyasa classes in the past but we've a few scheduling changes. I will check to see if we can make this happen. Thank you for your feedback!

@boomie -- have you tried the Nia classes? Those sound interesting too (barefoot -- that's my style).

I almost went yesterday but plan to try it.

It is NOT strenuous at all. It's the most relaxing, pampering 1.5 hours you can ever imagine.

OK, based on your recommendation, I'll audit a class and see how it goes. I am in sore (literally) need of relaxing and pampering. Thanks!

Restorative Yoga is incredible! I'm glad you are going to try that class. Debra Bernath is incredible. You will love her.

When will you have the future schedule on your website?

Thank you @ShaktiYoga! I will try to check out the Sunday community class.

Also @PurpleMonkeyDshwashr I hear wonderful things about Courtney Centrelli's 7:45pm Vinyasa class, which is on the schedule next week. I've been sticking to prenatal but that's on my list to try after baby!!

Where do you see next week's schedule?

If you visit ShaktiNJ.com and click on "Yoga" in the menu bar and select Schedule, it will bring up this week's schedule. At the top there is an arrow for Next Week. You can click ahead several weeks, though perhaps @ShaktiYoga can confirm how far in advance this is accurate.

@tarheelsinnj -- DUH! Thanks!

Happy New Moon Solar Eclipse!

@shakti -- I am so mad at myself for not knowing you had all these other services (as I said above, about Debra's shiatsu practice) for the last 6+ years I've lived here!!! But I'm glad I know now. :-D

@ShaktiYoga, what are your thoughts on modifying poses if one finds oneself in a class or a movement that is too strenuous or painful? I have always tried to listen to my body in every class and either modified (using blocks, straps, or blankets), slowed down, or just took child's pose if needed (while continuing to breathe, of course!). 99% of the time I have found instructors to be supportive and accepting in these situations when my body was suffering from one ailment or another. (The one exception was a very stringent Bikram teacher who commanded me to get out of child's pose and either sit up straight or lie on my back, neither of which was a helpful option due to lower back pain. He was rather mean about it. I send him my most loving and compassionate vibes.)

What say you, wise yogis?

Jed, always, always, always listen to your body first. The teacher serves as a guide and is there to help you and offer modifications but they are not in your body. If something doesn't feel good, don't do it. Ask the teacher for help or, if you have injuries, speak with the teacher before class and let him/her know. However, remain mindful of your unique situation.

We highly encourage the use of props in our classes. We have countless blankets, blocks and straps.

It sounds like you pay attention to your body. Good for you! Namaste.

Don't let the rain keep you away from your yoga mat!

5 Reiki Principles:

Just for today, do not anger
Do not worry and be filled with gratitude
Devote yourself to your work. Be kind to people.

We have a number of Reiki Practitioners at Shakti Yoga including Zintis and Judie Hurtado.

The Reiki healing technique originated in Japan in the 19th century and has since spread throughout the entire world. It is perhaps the most widely used form of non-invasive energy healing available today. During a Reiki session, the healer places their hands lightly on the patient’s clothed body, concentrating mostly on the major chakra areas.

Reiki is used to alleviate emotional, mental, as well as physical ailments, treating the body as a whole. During a session it is not uncommon for buried emotions to surface, the release of which facilitates the healing process. The Reiki energy balances the chakras, cleanses the meridians, and brings about a deep sense of well-being. It is highly successful at reducing stress and is frequently used in conjunction with various allopathic treatments. During the hands-on portion of the session, the healer often receives intuitive information from the client, and this is shared at the conclusion of the session.

Namaste.

Giving birth is one of the most transformative events in a woman's life.

New Jersey has the highest rate of Cesarean births in the country. And many agree the rate in this state and nationwide is too high (1 in 3 births.) The reasons are layered and complicated, but many women are discovering it's time to take back their births.

In this intensive workshop you will learn how to improve your chances of a physiological birth.
Get insight into what to expect in a typical hospital birth and some of the ways you might avoid unnecessary interventions.
Learn how to use movement, touch and vocalization as natural comfort measures.
Discover birthing "secrets" that may allow you to experience a more efficient birth.

Testimonials

"I am so grateful that I was able to attend the L&D course. If it wasn't for this class, I don't think I would have been able to get through the birthing process the way I did. This is a must for anyone considering a natural childbirth. I learned so much about our bodies and birthing process. This was a hands on class where we were able to learn how to get through contractions and I found this to be so useful during my labor. We plan on taking this class again when we have our second child." Melissa

"My husband and I drove from Manhattan to attend the L&D class at Shakti. Ires changed the course of how I approached labor. I was about 5 months pregnant when we took the class. I'm thrilled to say I did get the birth I was hoping for!" Shiri

Apologies for not reading through this thread in detail but: Would love to know if you have any "mom + kid" yoga classes that would be offered in the early evening or on weekends. Thanks.

bluepool, how old is your child? We don't currently have a Family Yoga class on the schedule but please let us know what you are looking for and perhaps we can make it happen if there's enough interest. Thank you.
