San Francisco hotel/neighborhood advice

We need to book a 7-night San Francisco stay for the beginning of October. Last time (years ago) we stayed in the Fisherman's Wharf neighborhood, which was great. However, looking at the prices now, everything in that area is priced in the $300s. We'd love to do better than that. Can you recommend a neighborhood that is still pleasant and well located but not so expensive?

It may seem an odd choice but it is easily accessible to the rest of town- something in Financial District. The Hilton just sent me an email that they just finished renovations, their price was in the low $200's a year ago when i stayed there. Not sure now. If you are looking for pricing discounts, Hilton has an Olympic sport portal where they offer the lowest prices available online for Hampton to Conrad level in all locations.

This was over 10 years ago but we stayed at the Beresford Arms about 2 blocks from Union Square - very easy to catch a cable car anywhere from there. We were traveling with an infant at the time and found it very easy to get around (including getting back to the hotel ASAP from a dinner in Fisherman's Wharf after a major diaper breach, forgotten extra outfit, an abort-mission in the middle of dinner, and a quick exit with our baby and to-go boxes).

The hotel is an old building - it's on the National Register of Historic Places - so if you are looking for modern this is not for you. But it's gorgeous - high ceilings, huge windows, chandeliers, victorian furniture, etc. The staff was fabulous and went over and above to make things easy for us, including giving us a complimentary limo ride to the airport at the end of our stay. There's also an evening wine social every night in the beautiful first floor parlor. When our son starting fussing one evening when we tried to go to the social, we left and went back to our suite, and the staff sent up a bottle of wine.

We had a big suite - huge LR/DR area, big bedroom, renovated bathroom, and a small, not-so-renovated kitchenette. As I recall, rates were very reasonable. Like I said, it's been over a decade since we were there, so I'd check trip advisor or similar sites for more recent reviews.

Note: there is another hotel owned by the same family called Hotel Beresford - they are not the same hotel. Beresford Arms is where we stayed - I don't know anything about Hotel Beresford.

You might want to try AirBNB, if you are open to that kind of thing.

Clean, comfortable, and safe. Doesn't have to be anything fancy, since we won't be doing much more than sleep there. (Less than a mile from Fisherman's Wharf would be a plus.)

we just stayed at The Metro Hotel on Divisidero in the Haight. I highly recommend it. Not luxury but not seeding in any way, plus it is a really good deal at 129.00. The neighborhood has some great restaurants too.

my only piece of advice for San Fran is that if you park your car on a hill turn your wheels, I got a 62 dollar ticket for having not done that.

you can also get a city pass for the week that allows you to ride all the street cars and get into some museums and do a bay cruise, it also covers admission to Monterey Aquarium, its a great deal

Stayed at the Hilton Union Square w/ my family this past spring. Was nice and well-located, and we got a relatively good rate. (Relative since it is SF, after all...). Also located right by the Hyde-Powell streetcar that took us to Fisherman's Wharf.

We were there last October. Rented a brownstone in the Mission District through VRBO and it was great. Much cheaper than a hotel but much more comfortable. Loved the Mission District.

I booked it for 5 nights for our nov trip

warwick was booked

two weeks in CA and san fran hotel is the least expensive-go figure.

it looks like there are two types of passes-one is just transport(street/cable cars/buses) for $35/7 days

citypass is $94 and includes some museums/aquariums. if it is only used for monterey aquarium at $40 then not worth it. will decide later.
