If you get HBO Signature and can set a DVR for 5:20 a.m. (east) or 8:20 a.m. (west), there is a beautiful hour-long documentary with strong parallels to today's Syrian refugee crisis.
"Fifty Children" is the story of a couple from Philadelphia who took a tremendous risk and made an incredible effort to bring endangered Jewish children to the United States. It's infuriating how many of the obstacles they faced were put up by our own government.
Public opinion was against those refugees as well, and our national leaders didn't have the moral courage to save as many as they could. The Krauses' story is inspiring, but it's sickening to think how many thousands more should have been saved. It's a shameful, mostly forgotten, chapter of American history.
