Radon Testing and Radon levels in Maplewood

Who typically does radon testing of homes in SOMA?  I have heard that radon levels in the area are higher than the EPA recommendation.

If you're buying, you'd want a licensed company to do the test so you can use the test with sellers.

If you're curious about your home, google radon detection kits for options. Home Depot used to (and probably) has them in stock for $10-$15.

It's not rocket science to do yourself. Typically you'd test in the basement, put the kit in a place where it won't be disturbed, maybe midway up from floor. Not near dryer (which creates air flow) Don't open any windows or doors in the basement, or likewise not upstairs that would create a big air flow from basement. Follow instructions for how long to leave the canister in place (several days), then mail it in.

Much of NJ has high radon levels... so yes, our area does too.

I think a lot of home inspectors offer this service - I know Ernie at All Pro Home does: http://www.allprohome.com

There's not much you can do other than seal the basement floor/walls and add adequate ventilation.

Ventilation system should be done by professionals .  Saw much of it done as a parallel treatment and remediation as I did my termite inspections.

I had to have a basement ventilated as a condition of sale after high radon levels were detected there. It wasn't very expensive ($1k) but the "professionals" did it in a way that ruined the skylight view of the master bath on a pretty terra cotta roof. The remediation was effective, though. If you're buying, do it yourself and make sure you can't see the PVC pipe.

Thanks, all, for the great advice!
