This works great if you don't need to seal the can again, but removing that lip is hell on can covers for stuff like pet food, so I had to go back to the old way of doing it.

Thank you. I have a can opener just like that and have a lot of trouble getting it to work. I will definitely try the blade on the side technique.
yeah - I tried it on a few cans with 2 different openers - wasn't very successful. Looks great on paper.
The can opener I bought at Kitchen a-la-mode only opens cans on their side. Very easy to use and takes up less drawer space.
I’ve got special can covers I use on opened cas. Made from waxed cloth. Been doing this for years.
