Praise for Valley Street Eatery

Previously mentioned in the Dining Options in Maplewood discussion, but it’s worth its own thread.

We finally got around to going this morning, with a friend visiting from out of town. He’s been something of a breakfast diner connoisseur since at least college (RIP, Ye Olde Waffle Shoppe), and his bacon, egg and cheese with potato rosti “hit the spot.” My wife and I went with the Taylor ham, egg and cheese with rosti and were equally pleased.

We all liked how the yolks were left just a little seepy, combining with the melted cheese to daub the brioche’s contents in molten yellow. (I bet you can ask for the egg over hard if you prefer it that way.)

Deliciously done.

I was so disappointed in myself when I got home and realized I forgot to ask for the rosti. It was still good. Would be nice to have fresher muffin and other pastry options.

Ha. Yeah, that crunch, not to mention flavor, is a great complement.

He should have done the upsell. I would have been all in.

It’s a new favorite of mine. The THEC with the rösti is the most amazing breakfast sandwich. A little sloppy to eat in the car but I’m up to the challenge and besides that’s what dry cleaners are for.

I've tried it, I found the THEC to be indeed good to very good, but IMO they should make the roll a little more substantial. It was like a McD's burger bun. If they upgraded to kaiser or somesuch the sandwich could go from good to great.

My friend’s bacon, egg and cheese was on a kaiser. I don’t know why the THEC has a brioche bun and the BEC a kaiser, but maybe they could sub the latter for the former on request.

Yeah I thought of that afterwards. Will try next time.

I thought I would surprise my wife by getting her the breakfast burrito, because she usually likes them. We're both going with the THEC plus rosti next time. I liked it with the brioche actually.

Do they have pork roll?  Or just this "Taylor ham" stuff?

Is it original or tangy - thin or thick cut?  grin

I say we should use "taylor" as a credit to the guy who invented it:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pork_roll

It was developed in 1856 by John Taylor of Trenton, and sold as "Taylor's Prepared Ham" until 1906.

I am really impressed, in a good way but also light-hearted, at how Jamie keeps coming up with very useful info.  This makes MOL a high-quality discussion board.

not to toot my own horn, but I beat Jamie by one minute with the pork roll deets. cheese

I went in last weekend for a breakfast burrito with the potato roti - delicious!  The only question is if I will get the same thing tomorrow or try something new.

Plus they have a container of mini marshmallows for the hot cocoa - that is a quality establishment.

I think I'll have to stop by tomorrow.

mmmm. breakfast...

I say it’s spinach, and I say the hell with it.

I had a turkey sub a month or so ago-it was very good.  $3 more for the 12inch vs the 6-it was double the size(not is everywhere)-need to try the rosti!

The breakfast scene around here has really upped its game. Jackie and Son and The Order are two good examples. And True Salvage as well. Plus the traditional diners and bagel shops are really good in SOMA as well.

This place is owned by Sabatino of Sabatino's Pizza.

There is an article in the recent addition of Maplewood Matters about him

Taylor ham, egg and cheese.

Is their menu somewhere online?  They don't seem to have a website with that basic info.
