Plastic bag recycling
I think that a lot of the grocery stores take them, but I can't speak for any in South Orange. It wouldn't surprise me if Pathmark takes them, but I haven't tried. I take mine to Whole Foods usually and I think I've taken them to the Millburn ShopRite.
This is one of my BIG pet peeves.
Why don't our townships have a means of disposal or recycling for them?
I find it strange that only retailers have figured out how to do it...

Pathmark takes them. The box is near the Coinstar coin place as you exit. Yes, at the entrance makes more sense.
Can't they be put in with our single stream recycling ? ( I also recycle then as trashbags for kitty poop and doogie do.)

In Maplewood, the instructions for recycling say no plastic bags, even though the bags do have recycling numbers on them. I can't speak for South Orange, but I suspect similar.LL_ said:

Related question - how do you wash your reusable shopping bags? Not the fabric ones which I can just toss in the washer - the the plastic ones like Trader Joe's.
The DPW worker at the Maplewood recycling center told me that plastic bags get tangled up in the sorting machinery and that is bad for the process. Sorry, that is technical as I can recall. Just accept that they need to be processed separately, which is why supermarkets and dry cleaners collect them.

No they are not supposed to go in with the single stream. We drop them off in the bin just inside Ashley market's rear door.
Another vote for Staples. The bin is in the front. They also accept batteries and up to six electronic devises a day. I just bought a new cordless phone, brought the old one in for recycling, and yanked out the battery and recycled that at the same time. Ashley's still has the bin just as you enter the SO doors, before you go into the store.

I would say for the non-washables ones to maybe wipe them down with a wet sponge or cloth. Basically, spot clean them.
Reuseable bags are easy to clean, just wpie them out with a soapy sponge. If you have one of those laundry sinks, you can rinse them there.

I agree -- but on the other side of the coin, Shop-Rite has stopped giving a credit for using your own bags.
I went to Kam Man today and there was a group of young people giving out fabric shopping bags and urging us not to use plastic (they were pleased to see me carrying in my own fabric bags). I asked them why they weren't telling Kam Man to stop using styrofoam clamshells and they just looked at me with their mouths open. Oh well, baby steps, I guess...

In Austin, Texas (and no doubt other places) you have to pay for bags at the stores. (Something like 25 cents.)
