Piano disposal

What's the best way to get rid of a piano?  Beautiful old spinet, needs tuning maybe more work, but I just want it gone. Is recycling an option?  I hate to put it in a dumpster. Any idea of the cost?

You can always put it out on here or Facebook as a free piano as long as someone gets it moved. Although being both old and a spinet you'll be less likely to find a taker.

We recently got a studio piano 'free' from a relative and I learned the hard way how much work a 1968 piano might need to actually play properly. Move and tune ended up being $700 and it still could use some work on the action.

You can check with David Estey and see if he's interested. He sometimes acquires and restores older pianos. If he thinks it's able to be rehabbed he might take it.

In addition to posting here it would be wise to upload a pic and add it to the free items in the MOL classified section.  I imagine you'll have a taker shortly.  Please don't trash it.

Maybe it could be used for the next street piano event.

FYI: A spinet weighs approx 350 lbs. Not easy to move which is why piano movers get to charge so much. If you can't get any takers and it truly becomes "trash" (so-to-speak), they can be broken up and disposed of that way, which I know from personal experience. Even the sounding board can be broken up with a sledge hammer since it is cast iron and will crack apart.

Some additional ideas:

You can separate the cast iron plate from the sounding board and use it as an objet d'art!

If the keys are old enough they may be made of ivory and you could try selling it across state lines or to another country without proper documentation and see if you can get arrested.

Give some info re: Mfr, age inc photo etc when listing in Freegygle

Also try Essex County Freecycle.
