You might like a tablet for the kitchen. Some are quite inexpensive.
I ran across this. Seems promising. I've never used a chromebook though.
I have a chromebook, which I like, and only cost a bit more than $200 new. I understand that the newer versions will run most android apps on them, although mine will not be updated that way, as an older model. While there isn't much storage room, I can send any big files to the cloud or my PC for storage, and it hasn't been a problem.
However, I like Tom's idea of a kitchen tablet, which can be kept open more easily perhaps, and wouldn't be quite as bulky. My wife has one and uses it in the kitchen a lot with recipes. If you're going to be doing a lot of typing and prefer a keyboard, I'd go with a chromebook, but if it's mainly for viewing e.g. recipes, websites and emails, a tablet would be fine.

I actually tried a tablet for awhile, but found that I missed a real keyboard.
oh well. Microcenter has got a refurb HP Windows touchscreen notebook for $150 so I went with that. Gonna pick it up tonight.

Love my Chromebook. Previously had a refurb from Microcenter and it just up and died one day.

I want a small notebook to leave in my kitchen. I've got a dell 3000 at the moment, and it is the worst g-d- computer I've ever owned and I just can't put up with it anymore.
As usual, I want to get away as cheap as possible on this. I figure a chromebook is the best alternative, but I don't know much about them. If it supports as many apps as my phone then I'm probably good to go.
I'd like a touchscreen too.
Haven't looked into this at all yet. My next stop is Amazon...
