NJT service suspended due to incident in S.O. (Monday 4/18)

Just got this alert from NJT.  This makes me sick to contemplate.

Morris & Essex Line service is suspended in both
directions due to a trespasser fatality at South Orange station.

We saw 5 or 6 police cars, two ambulances in front of Ashleys. Helicopters.

I'm on the 4:38 from Penn Station.  We've been held east of Orange for about 40 minutes.  The announcements have said no traffic in either direction because of police activity at the South Orange station related to a trespasser.

perhaps that explains the three helicopters circling.  Sad to hear

Not sure why they need helicopters with so many police on the ground?

Most likely news/traffic reporters.  CBS just reported the suspension of service on the Morris/Essex Line in both directions but did not mention the fatality. An aerial photo of South Orange Train Station accompanied the story.

Sheena Collum just posted on FB: "New Jersey Transit is in the process of investigating this incident. We have been advised that the Morris & Essex line will be shut down to all rail traffic during the investigation. Commuters leaving New York City are advised to check the New Jersey Transit website for contingency plans and are further advised to make alternate transportation arrangements to leave the city. This could include taking the PATH to Hoboken or Newark. New Jersey Transit may seek to arrange bus transportation from those destinations."

Good luck getting home, everyone.

If you can get someone to pick you up try going to Union Station next to Keane University.

Just got email from NJ Transit - trains are moving again but with 60-minute delays in both directions.

Oddly everything seems normal enough at Penn Station.  Trains are all going out without 'real' delays  but my wife is on the 5:18 and saying she's going backward into Harrison.  There is a cancelled train, but it's the NJ Coast line

I'm on the 5:34 from Hoboken, and we're moving, but just barely. Not complaining, though--just very sorry for the victim and her family.

Woman Struck, Killed By NJ TRANSIT Train In South Orange - WCBS News

Sheena Collum is not mayor of South Orange. Hey someone had to say it.

How terrible. I wonder if it was an accident or suicide? Sometimes you never find out. Hopefully there are witnesses so the family will not have to wonder. A friend/colleague of mine was struck and killed by the DC metro a few years ago, and they never were able to figure out what happened and it has continued to haunt his friends and family.

In a thread about a tragedy, no one had to get picky except a boor.
